- New RootsMagic Tip Sheet Available for Download
Bill Bienia has created a Tips Sheet for RootsMagic v3. It is available in
PDF format from his website at:

The Tips sheet provides a collection of tips associated with RootsMagic
version 3. The Tips cover such topics as setting up your folders, date
modifiers and resulting sort dates, variables used in sentence
construction, the order that notes appear in your narrative reports, short
cut key codes for entering several symbols (with space to add a few of your
own favourites), privatizing your data, and a full page of short cut keys
available to execute commands and perform navigation in many parts of the
program.
While much of the data is available through the help files or the
RootsMagic mailing list on Rootsweb, Bill has collected the information
together in one place and added a few of his own tips.
Bill Bienia is a long-time user of RootsMagic (and its predecessor Family
Origins), and teaches classes on Getting the Most Out of RootsMagic. As a
member of the faculty at the National Institute for Genealogical Studies,
Bill creates on-line course material for genealogical software programs,
including RootsMagic, available through the Institute. Bill, a professional
genealogist and owner of Cobblestone Legacies, is available for research,
consulting, training and speaking, and can be reached at

- Places We'll Be This Month
This month we will be making our annual appearance at the Ohio Genealogical
Society (OGS) annual conference, held this year April 17-19 in Cincinnati.

- RootsMagic User Group Meeting at NGS in Kansas City
For those who live in the Kansas City area, or will be attending NGS, we
will be having a RootsMagic User Group meeting on Saturday May 17 from 10am

- Tip of the Month
We get a lot of questions about what hotkeys are available in RootsMagic.
One of our users put together a list a while back and we thought it might
be useful as a tip of the month. Here it is...
Below is a list of all the hot/shortcut keys I've found or observed so far.
Some of them are obvious to the user, others are not. This is NOT a
complete list. I am CERTAIN I have not found them all yet.

Good luck memorizing all these hot keys. It might just be easier to just
use the mouse. :-)
First, in any screen, if you press the ALT key, one letter of all menu
choices will be underlined if that menu choice has an associated hot key.
HOT KEYS AVAILABLE IN MAIN SCREEN
Ctrl+B Bookmark people
Ctrl+F Bring up the RootsMagic Explorer
Ctrl+Shift+F Bring up a list of families in the database
Ctrl+I Search Internet sites for a person in your database
Ctrl+HOME Go to Root Person
Ctrl+H Bring up the search and replace dialog box
Ctrl+N Create a new database
Ctrl+O Open an existing database
Ctrl+P Print a Report (Bring up a list of available reports)
Ctrl+V View immediate family of highlighted person
ENTER key Edit the highlighted person

CINCINNATI / DAYTON, OHIO
Next meeting May 4, 2008.
We do have a functioning Roots Magic Users Group and are ready to "go
public" with it. We are a Cincinnati/Dayton Ohio group and meet about 4
times a year, generally in Monroe Ohio, between Dayton and Cincinnati.
At present we have more members from the Dayton area than from the
Cincinnati area so we meet a bit nearer Dayton than Cincinnati. That
could change if our membership changes. Our next meeting is on May 4th.
If people are interested in joining (or at least coming to a meeting) they
should
e-mail me at cccole4@juno.com. Everyone in the group will have access
to all other members so they can contact members between meetings to ask
questions.
