Wine House Cocktail Party, November 2006

Dear Criss,

This week is a pretty exciting week for Winehouse, the Brasserie is having it's second birthday! For our birthday this week you can have a free glass of
Chandon NV in the Brasserie, and equally popular, and exclusive to the Brasserie, are the remaining bottles of the rare Gaelic Cemetery Shiraz. This newsletter we also take a close look at some wines being shown in our Function Space Tasting, including a new release of Meshach, we offer a Wine Education session on Saturday 3rd May and answer the trivia.

We hope you enjoy,

From the Team at Wine House

This week at Wine House -

2nd Birthday for Brasserie.
Its our party and we'll share if we want to!!

Yes that's right, our fantastic Brasserie is coming up to its Second Birthday on Friday, the 11th April. It has been a fantastic journey for us and we would like to share in the celebrations with our patrons!

Dine in The Brasserie anytime between now and Friday, and if you mention our birthday to any of our friendly staff, we will give you a little birthday present; a chilled, refreshing flute of Chandon NV Sparkling.

We can't be the only ones celebrating now, can we?

Call the Brasserie on 03 9698 8008 to arrange your evening, lunch or function!

Please note the Brasserie is closed on Saturday 12th for a private function.

Brasserie - Gaelic on the menu.

Wine Advocate 98 points!

The Gaelic Cemetery Vineyard Shiraz is a super premium wine harvested from low yielding vines grown on Grant Arnold's vineyard at White Hatt in South Australia's Clare Valley. This vineyard is located adjacent to the region's "Gaelic Cemetery", hence the name. The high quality fruit provided from the 2005 vintage has resulted in a wine of enormous intensity and richness - a true expression of it's origins.

Having gained widespread notoriety for their Solitary Block label, the Barletta brothers of Australian Domaine Wines have simply skyrocketed with this utter tour de force of Australian wine. The Wine Advocate review put this wine on the same pedestal as the 2002 Penfolds Grange, Rolf Binder Hanisch 2002 and Kaesler Old Bastard 2005. A shame only 1200 bottles were produced.

As the quantities of this wine are incredibly low, our bottle shop having sold out weeks ago, we have decided to do something special. To coincide with the launch of our new Brasserie Wine List, the Gaelic is available in the Wine House restaurant for $220 per bottle, but only upon request. As the quantities are already low this wine will not be formally printed on the new wine list. Mentioning the "codeword" Gaelic will be your "Mission Impossible" way of gaining access to the wine.

Call the Brasserie on 03 9698 8008 to arrange your evening or to enquire about function packages.

Old & Rare Wines - Function Space Tasting Wines

To coincide with the upcoming Function Space Tasting, we are going to showcase a few wines that we will be showing on the day to give you the opportunity to see what is on show, and also help you make some decisions about what you would like to taste on the day... Happy browsing!

Grant Burge Meshach Shiraz 2002

(new 2003 release on tasting)

Barossa Valley, SA.

Jeremy Oliver 95 points!

Wine Advocate 93 points!

Anyone who knows Barossa Shiraz knows that this is one of the best wines the Valley produces. Meshach is a rich wine made from old vine grapes harvested from the Filsell vineyard. The 2002 is very intense and assertively oaked, with dark plums, blackcurrants and dark chocolate backed by toasty aromas of vanilla, coconut ice, cedar and cigarboxes. Surprisingly fine and elegant and seamless, its palate is saturated with jammy black and red berry flavours and supported by fine, firm tannins of genuine strength. It delivers a splendid bouquet of smoky oak, scorched earth, pencil lead, violets, bacon, and blueberry. It has outstanding depth, length, complexity, and gobs of flavor. It has enough structure to evolve for 12-18 years but can be enjoyed now, if you wish.

The current Meshach release is the 2002 but we will have the newly the released Grant Burge Meshach 2003 at our Function Space Tasting. We must note however, because this wine is so limited in its quantities, the number of bottles available for tasting is strict so please arrive early.

The 2002 Meshach is $110.00 per bottle

Tyrrell's DB24 McLaren Vale Shiraz 2005, McLaren Vale, SA.

Try at the Function Tasting this Sumptuous Shiraz!

The concept for DB24 was to create a contemporary Shiraz that still maintains the Tyrrell stamp of finesse and elegance. This does it all! 90% McLaren Vale and 10% Heathcote fruit, this is incredibly complex. DB24 = double new oak maturation for 12 months each. BIG!
$62.96 in a dozen | $69.95 per bottle

Brokenwood Hunter Valley Shiraz 2006, Hunter Valley, NSW.

Try at the Function Tasting this 5 Star Producer from the Hunter!

Also renowned for their Semillons, the HV Shiraz is a great medium-bodied shiraz with bright youthful tints & aromas of mocha, dark chocolate and charry bramble from the oak. Nicely restrained. Typical savoury Hunter characters abound. Top value for the money.
$26.96 in a dozen | $29.95 per bottle

Kay Brothers Merlot 2005, McLaren Vale, SA.

Try at the Function Tasting this wine, the Future of Merlot!

We have tasted some great Merlot wines in the last few weeks, Brown Brothers, Craggy Range are two that spring to mind, with the iconic Irvine and popular Abbotts Prayer another couple. The future of Merlot may be this Kay Brothers, outstanding fruit and balance.

$26.96 in a dozen | $29.95 per bottle

McHenry Hohnen 'Tiger Country' 2005, Margaret River, WA.
Try at the Function Tasting this Different, but Delicious wine!

Cabernet blends are Margaret river's natural choice, but Tiger Country combines Tempranillo, Petit Verdot & Cabernet. The combination between the first & last is not uncommon - in Spain - but the addition of the Petit Verdot makes this wine pretty unique.

$25.16 in a dozen | $27.95 per bottle

Pondalowie Vineyard Blend Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon 2005, Bendigo, VIC.

Try at the Function Tasting Uncorked's - Best red wine!

Here the Pondalowie, Shiraz, Cabernet and Tempranillo are co-fermented to make up this Bendigo blend. It has plump and luscious Shiraz, with dark berry and plum characters and firm tannins, and lots of minty Cab with some raspberry Temp characters. That's complex!
$17.96 in a dozen | $19.95 per bottle

Remember, entry is only $20 and this then entitles you to a $10 Voucher to be redeemed at the Brasserie, and we will credit the remaining $10 back on any 6 bottles of wine purchased!!

Wine Trivia

Last week we asked...

How many names for tempranillo can you find? The most verified answers wins.

Thanks for the answers and congratulation to Bradley for giving 52 answers and having the most verified names on his list.

This week we ask...

In 2001 parts of North America suffered an airborne "epidemic" that ruined vintage. What was this "epidemic"?

For your chance to win a $30 Lunch Special at the Brasserie, or a $30 voucher at Old & Rare Wines, email your correct answer to sales@winehouse.com.au.  Extra consideration is given to detailed answers where many correct replies are received in a short time period.
