GLOBAL EXCHANGE

Dear Global Exchange supporter,

At the fourth Security and Prosperity Partnership (SPP) summit, on April 21-22 in New Orleans, President Bush, Mexican President Calderon and Canadian Prime Minister Harper will meet behind closed doors with their corporate allies to continue designing a new "NAFTA plus" agenda.

Although the SPP's policies will have social, economic and environmental impacts on citizens across the continent, the process of their development is taking place without any congressional oversight or public participation. Furthermore, instead of tackling the problems at the root of the NAFTA model - growing income gaps, worker insecurity and dramatically accelerated migration - the efforts have focused on simply expanding more of the same failed trade and labor policies.

Take Action
  • Tell Congress: Say NO to Plan Mexico. Last October, President Bush introduced the "The Merida Initiative," popularly known as Plan Mexico, to Congress. As one product of the SPP, the development of this initiative took place without public participation and even now the administration has not released its details.

  • Tell others about the SPP. Most North Americans have never even heard of the SPP. Help empower communities to challenge the SPP's anti-democratic process and the expansion of already failed economic policies.

A new way forward for trade and migration

Over the past month, our national speaking tour, "Better Neighbors: A New Way Forward for North America," has detailed the indisputable yet seldom mentioned links between bad continental trade and economic policies, and accelerated Mexican migration to the US. The tour, now in its final week, has featured a team of experts taking a critical look at the "NAFTA-plus," Security and Prosperity Partnership, being forged behind closed doors between the leading corporations and executive branches of the U.S., Mexico and Canada.

Global Exchange's Mexico Program has drawn together a diverse group of researchers, advocates, and policy makers on both sides of the U.S. - Mexico border to help expand the debate on immigration and support policies that deal with its root causes. [Learn More]
