Editor's Corner: There's No Free (Photoshop) Lunch

Last week, Adobe announced a beta of its free online image editor, Photoshop Express. And as you might expect of a product with the power of the mighty A behind it, Photoshop Express is a pretty cool tool.

But don't start dreaming of the money you'll save on software. Photoshop Express is no replacement for the desktop app. It's definitely for consumers, and not nearly as capable as even Photoshop Elements. And, at least as a beta, it's maddeningly slow.

This is Photoshop Express's bare-bones editing mode. The choices on the left include crop, rotate, exposure, red-eye removal, saturation, white balance, fill light, sharpen, hue, tint, sketch, and distort.

Photoshop Express's real value for creative pros is as a demonstration of what a rich Internet application, or RIA, can be. (For more on the topic, see "The Lowdown on RIAs.")
