INTEL ANNOUNCES FIRST ATOM CHIPS
Accompanied by two dozen partners with prototype designs based on its
new chips, Intel today announced five models in its new "Centrino Atom"
line of mobile and embedded processors. The Z500-series chips, formerly
"Silverthorne," range from 800MHz to 1.8GHz, with TDPs between 0.65mW
and 2.4mW.

MICROSOFT UNVEILS WINDOWS MOBILE 6.1
Microsoft has announced an upgrade to its embedded operating system for
smartphones and PDAs. Windows Mobile 6.1 includes a "sliding panel" home
screen, a new task manager, enhanced cut-and-paste, threaded SMS,
improved Direct Push technology, and the ability to zoom out on web
pages, Microsoft says.

HTC ANNOUNCES UNLOCKED WINDOWS MOBILE 6.1 PHONE
HTC has announced the U.S. release of a smartphone that runs Windows
Mobile 6.1 and will be sold in unlocked, carrier-independent form. The
Touch Dual has a touchscreen user interface, a slide-out QWERTY
keyboard, dual cameras, plus GSM/GPRS/EDGE (850/900/1800/1900Mhz) and
HSDPA (850/1900Mhz) connectivity.

WINDOWS MOBILE 6.1 PHONES OFFER VIDEO OUTPUT
A new smartphone manufacturer has made its debut with two new Windows
Mobile 6.1-based devices. Velocity Mobile's Velocity 103 and Velocity
111 output video to VGA displays and TVs, offer WiFi, Bluetooth, and
GPS, and will be sold as unlocked, carrier-independent devices.

RUSSIAN WINDOWS MOBILE PHONES TARGET THE WELL-HEELED

WINDOWS MOBILE 6 CAMERA PHONE DOES GEOTAGGING
MWG has added to its range of Windows Mobile 6 Professional phones with
a new model that can tag pictures with GPS coordinates. The Atom V has a
2-megapixel camera, 2.8-inch touchscreen display, 802.11b/g wireless
networking, Bluetooth, and an FM radio.

FOUR CARRIERS ADOPT $100 SMARTPHONE
Motorola has introduced a low-cost Windows Mobile 6-based smartphone
that will be available from four different carriers. The MOTO Q 9c
includes a QWERTY keyboard, 1.3 megapixel camera, stereo speakers, and
the ability to make calls or open applications via speech recognition.

"GESTURE" SOFTWARE USES CAMERA INSTEAD OF ACCELEROMETER
GestureTek Mobile says it plans to release Windows Mobile programs that
can use a phone's camera as a pointing device. The applications will
include a picture viewer, web browser, text messaging software, games,
and mapping software.

VIRTUALIZATION STACK ADDS WINDOWS SUPPORT
VirtualLogix has updated the Intel Architecture (IA) version of its
embedded virtualization stack, which targets performance-critical
telecom and datacom applications. VLX for Network Infrastructure
(VLX-NI) 3.0 adds support for Microsoft Windows guests, Intel VT-d
(virtualization technology for directed I/O), and Core Microarchitecture
3.0, while adding new Eclipse-based set-up tools.

WINDOWS CE 6.0 PDA SHRUGS OFF SIX-FOOT DROPS
iWave Systems of Bangalore has announced a Windows CE 6.0-based
industrial PDA targeting asset, inventory, and retail management.
Available with RFID, WiFi, and GSM/GPRS/EDGE connectivity, the
iW-Rainbow-G4 can withstand six-foot drops, and includes a 3.5-inch
touchscreen display and a sealed keyboard.

HTC'S SHIFT GETS MIXED REVIEWS
This month, HTC began shipping the U.S. version of an eagerly
anticipated UMPC (ultra-mobile PC) that runs both Windows Vista and
Windows CE on dual processors. Initial reviews praise the Shift's
physical design and ease-of-use, but criticize its lack of phone

A Chinese automotive electronics maker serving domestic and
international car manufacturers has built a Windows CE-based navigation,

Dsus's DS-400GB features a 4-inch touchscreen monitor, rear-view camera,
Bluetooth, built-in speakers, multimedia playback, and an SD expansion slot.
