The 15th
Oxford Conference for the Book, April 3-5, is dedicated to writer,

the pre-eminent writers of twentieth-century. Her major works include
THEIR EYES WERE WATCHING GOD, MULES AND MEN, her autobiography DUST
TRACKS ON THE ROAD, plus children's books and essays. Hurston
was closely associated with the Harlem Renaissance and influenced
such writers as Ralph Ellison, Toni Morrison, and Alice Walker. On
Saturday, April 5, Off Square Books hosts an all-Conference book
signing. The official Hurston website is www.zoranealehurston.com
and the schedule and slate of participants for the conference can be
found at www.oxfordconferenceforthebook.com.

EVENTS
WEDNESDAY, APRIL 2, signing/reception at 5 p.m., reading at 5:30PM.
Philip Shirley OH DON'T YOU CRY FOR ME (Jefferson Press, hd. 19.95)
Mark
Childress says, "Philip Shirley takes classic southern themes
and settings - a turkey hunt, a honky-tonk, a lonely road to
the middle of nowhere - and turns them into something uniquely
his own. His people feel like real people. This collection of tightly
written, closely observed stories marks a memorable debut in the
world of fiction." BUY NOW!
Special THACKER MOUNTAIN RADIO: OXFORD CONFERENCE FOR THE BOOK THURSDAY, APRIL 3, Event begins at 5:30 p.m.
Kevin
Brockmeier THE
VIEW FROM THE SEVENTH LAYER (Pantheon,
hd. 21.95)
In
his new book, Brockmeier's (A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DEAD)
ability to see our lives as an alien might gives the readers a
wonderful vantage, and his skillful writing carries one along into
this world made strange. Some of the stories are fables and parables
as in "A Fable With Slips of White Paper Spilling from the
Pockets" in which a man buys God's overcoat at a thrift
shop. One story, "The Human Soul as a Rube Goldberg Device,"
is a choose-your-own-adventure-but all paths converge at the
unavoidable ending. Like Jose Saramago and Jorge Luis Borges,
Brockmeier's heightened imagination and fine writing leave the
reader much to ponder after the pleasure of reading has passed.CFR BUY NOW!

SCANNING THE FRONT TABLES
A
PERSON OF INTEREST by
Susan Choi (Viking,
hd. 24.95)
When
a mail bomb explodes in the campus office next door, Lee, an Asian
American math professor, comes under suspicion. The authorities
believe he may be the infamous "brain bomber," an elusive
terrorist whose primary targets are prominent scientists and
mathematicians. Intricately plotted and engrossing, A
Person of Interest
asks how far one man can run from his past, and explores the impact
of scrutiny and suspicion in an age of terror. With its drive and
vividly realized characters, Susan Choi's (AMERICAN
WOMAN and
THE FOREIGN STUDENT) latest novel confirms her place as an important
chronicler of the American experience. Susan Choi is in Oxford for
the Book Conference. Signed copies will be available.

OPENING LINES
"Ships
at a distance have every man's wish on board. For some they
come in with the tide. For others they sail forever on the horizon,
never out of sight, never landing until the Watcher turns his eyes
away in resignation, his dreams mocked to death by Time. That is the
life of men."
