Thirty Years Between
Dates:
Behind The Scenes With Cal State
Fullerton's Trip To The Big Dance
By Matt Brown
(Editor's Note: Matt Brown is the team
photographer for Cal State Fullerton. Thirty years ago the Titans were
the darling of the NCAA Tournament, making an improbably march to the
Sweet 16. He accompanied the team to their 1st Round game against
Wisconsin in the Omaha Regional.)
She is Going to Kill Me
Around 9:30PM on March 15th during the finals of the Men's Big West Tournament, I knew I was going somewhere with the Cal State Fullerton team. The beating that this team was giving UCI left no doubt in my head. I just came from the Sports Shooter Academy V two weeks ago. Now I was finishing up the Big West Tournament that eats up 15 hours a day for four days. So telling my wife Antoinette I was leaving again for 4-6 more days was no easy task.
Sunday afternoon my site was picked for me: Omaha, Nebraska. Wait a second, I have gone to Omaha with the Cal State Fullerton's baseball team 5 out of the last 7 years and now and the NCAA committee is sending basketball team to Omaha and my summer vacation spot.

Will Work For Passion
A photojournalist leaves his newspaper
job to freelance in Vietnam.
By Kevin German
Sporadic thoughts suffocated my every
breath these past few months as I contemplated leaving a staff
photography position at The Sacramento Bee. In a troublesome time for
the newspaper industry this was a difficult decision to make. I have
friends who are losing their jobs due to cutbacks and layoffs, while I
decide to leave a completely healthy position on my own accord.
But this decision didn't come from the fear of the decline of the newspaper industry. It came from passion and faith. Faith in myself as a photographer, as an explorer of life.

Farewell, Yet Again...
Brooklyn native Andrew Kaufman pays
tribute to Dodgertown.
By Andrew Kaufman
By Andrew Kaufman
I sometimes wonder to myself if they had
torn down the Roman Coliseum would Rome still be such a tourist hot
spot? The very center of the Roman Empire and modern civilization!!
How could they tear it down? Where would all the history go? Vaporize?
It seems as though I have a growing collection of photography of
sports stadiums that no longer exist or are used by the teams other
then the ones that made them famous. Chicago Stadium, The Orange Bowl,
Bobby Maduro Baseball stadium in Miami and now Dodgertown. What is
making the famous venues obsolete?
Originally being from Brooklyn my father wore my ear off talking about Ebbets Field and the Brooklyn Dodgers. How he would sometimes be able to sneak in with his friends or would be lucky enough to have enough milk tops to get a seat in the bleachers. I think five was the magic number. Peewee Reese this, Duke Snyder that, ugh! All I wanted to hear about was Reggie Jackson, Thurman Munson, Bucky Dent and the NY Yankees.

Bonds Has Been Barry Barry Good To
Me
Freelance photographer Brad Mangin looks at
life without Barry Bonds.
By Brad Mangin
Opening Day of the 2008 baseball season is
upon us and for the first time since I started freelancing in 1993 I
will be shooting the San Francisco Giants without number 25 in left
field.
For the last fifteen years it has been my pleasure to photograph the greatest baseball player I have ever seen with my own eyes play on a daily basis. Sure, Barry Bonds wasn't exactly the warmest and fuzziest guy to ever wear the orange and black and he had some chemical help along the way (and so did everyone else) but you know what? I could care less. The left fielder provided me with the most thrilling moments I have ever photographed. He also put money in my pocket and brought me out of my seat (section 108, row 27, seat 1) at AT&T Park many times in recent years to cheer for many of his home runs into McCovey Cove.

Workshop-Mania
Nineteen Years Between Workshop
Experiences
By Paul Morse
Looking for direction and inspiration I attended a course at the Santa Fe Workshops called Choice and Vision taught by New York based portrait photographer Greg Heisler. This was only the second photo workshop I have attended. Way back in 1989 Greg was my group leader at the Eddie Adams Workshop and his philosophy toward environmental portraits, work ethic and intelligent way of using light had a big influence on me. Heading out to New Mexico I was psyched to study with a photographer I have admired for my whole career.

Workshop-Mania: Surviving 3 Exams, A
Snow Storm and Sports Shooter Academy V
By Charles Ludeke, University of
Missouri
Three exams in one week. I was spending so
much time studying in Ellis Library; I might as well have brought a
sleeping bag and my pillow. My trip to Orange County for SSAV couldn't
come any sooner ---I needed a break from school and the harsh,
unpredictable Missouri winter.
On the day of my flight, a snowstorm that hit St. Louis added several extra travel hours to my trip. Normally, the drive to the airport is around an hour-and-a-half. Instead, it took me five hours to get there. My desire to be in 70-degree, sunny weather in Southern California couldn't come any sooner.

Penn Camera News and Specials for March
By Elbert Morris
I hope everyone has survived both the men's and women's NCAA tournaments and have not become too depressed with the NHL and NBA seeming to go on forever. Remember, Baseball is starting at the end of March and all will be well with the universe at that time.
Camera News:
On the camera news front, there doesn't seem to be any earth shattering announcements in the near future so we will touch on what is current. The Nikon D300 is now open stock. Our list for the Nikon D3 is shrinking. NPS members can call for priority. The waiting list for the Canon 1DSMIII has improved also. Give us a call for SS prices and availability on these three cameras. Still no BL-3 end caps yet.
There is also a mail-in rebate of $150.00 on the Pixma Pro9500 printer.
