ANALYSIS
_______________
The low-cost laptop offer Microsoft can't refuse
http://cwflyris.computerworld.com/t/3044699/158421455/105896/0/
As the release of low-cost laptops based on Intel's upcoming Atom
processor draws near, Microsoft is getting boxed into a corner. The
software company plans to stop selling most Windows XP licenses after
June 30, yet most of these low-cost laptops won't be powerful enough to
run Vista when they arrive later this year.
Despite deadlines, XP to be sold a few more years
http://cwflyris.computerworld.com/t/3044699/158421455/105897/0/
June 30 of this year and Jan. 31, 2009, may be the deadlines for U.S.
retailers and custom system builders, respectively, to sell Windows XP.
But, due to exceptions Microsoft has made, the operating system will be
available for at least the next two years for those who purchased
business and Ultimate versions of Vista, as well as for customers in
certain geographies.

OOXML results in, but ISO delays announcement
http://cwflyris.computerworld.com/t/3044699/158421455/105895/0/
The vote result on whether the Microsoft-built Office Open XML file
format will become an international standard won't be officially
revealed until Wednesday, the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO), said late Monday. ISO is notifying its members of
the result of the voting before announcing it to the general public.
Adobe joins Linux Foundation, develops Air for Linux
http://cwflyris.computerworld.com/t/3044699/158421455/105793/0/
Adobe Systems released an early alpha version of its rich Internet
application platform AIR for Linux on Monday, and announced that it has
joined the Linux Foundation, a nonprofit organization that promotes and
standardizes Linux.
Toshiba shows prototype home control robot
http://cwflyris.computerworld.com/t/3044699/158421455/105898/0/
If you've become hostage to a clutch of remote controls in your living
room, never quite sure what all the buttons do and confusing different
controllers for different gadgets, then Toshiba might have the answer.
It's developed a prototype robot that can act as a voice gateway to just
about anything in the room that has a remote control.
With Vista breached, Linux unbeaten in hacking contest
http://cwflyris.computerworld.com/t/3044699/158421455/105794/0/
The MacBook Air went first; a tiny Fujitsu laptop running Vista was
hacked on the last day of the contest; but it was Linux, running on a
Sony Vaio, that remained undefeated as conference organizers ended a
three-way computer hacking challenge Friday at the CanSecWest
conference.
Report: Number of GPL v3 projects tops 2,000
http://cwflyris.computerworld.com/t/3044699/158421455/105899/0/
The number of open-source projects that use the GNU General Public
License Version 3 has grown to more than 2,000, according to Palamida,
which sells software and services for tracking open-source code within a
customer's code base.
CAN-SPAM still gets mixed reviews
http://cwflyris.computerworld.com/t/3044699/158421455/105900/0/
Just days after so-called spam king Robert Soloway pleaded guilty in
Seattle to a number of criminal charges, the FTC announced a record $2.9
million settlement with online marketing firm ValueClick. But despite
these recent court cases, some critics don't see a lot of value in
CAN-SPAM.

Researchers: Glasses aren't geeky
http://cwflyris.computerworld.com/t/3044699/158421455/85680/0/
For too long, those who wear glasses have been stigmatized as dorkwads
and lame-os. But now, scientists have declared that glasses-wearers are
no more likely than the population at large to be introverted, and are
slightly more likely than average to be "agreeable." There's no word on
whether these geeky scientists are themselves four-eyed types with an
agenda to push.

Removing administrative privileges from Windows users has powerful
security and compliance benefits. But it often creates new problems.
This whitepaper, written by Microsoft MVP Brien Posey, explains how to
significantly ease IT’s workload by building an environment that allows
users to install authorized applications, and provides additional
controls for the 25% of a typical company’s users that still require
