Dear Criss,
This is more than just another week at Wine House, as it is always
special to find a wine as good as the
Tim Adams 2005 Shiraz, it is great
to have, arguably, Melbourne's best wine list in the
Brasserie, more wineries announced
for our
Function Space Tasting, a
wine education course announced,
and more
old & rare wines than you can poke
a stick at.
We hope you enjoy,
From the Team at Wine House
This week at Wine House
-
Tim Adams Shiraz 2005,
Clare Valley, SA.
Wine House Highly Recommends!
Recently we tried the
Tim Adams 2005 Shiraz
along side seven other Shiraz wines of various price brackets in a
"blind" tasting, which was a tasting completed with all the wines
masked so the label does not influence opinion. At the end of the
tasting wines ranging from $15 to $70 were revealed and the
2005 Tim Adams Shiraz
was the wine shown to have topped the votes!!!
The
Tim Adams wine has everything in
good wine to offer. Good Clare Valley berry, chocolate, and mint characters with nice
oak integration, a persistent palate (which means the wonderful flavour lasts in the mouth) and, when the wine was tried an hour
after the initial tasting, it was better than before meaning that
this is a
wine that will age well.
Every tick in the
desirable box of wine is why we highly recommend this
Tim Adams. A good red for any and all wine drinkers, this is highly
recommended for now or cellaring for four to eight years .

Brasserie - New wine
list.
Melbourne's, best, cheapest and most complete wine list is at the
Brasserie.
After
more than a month of compiling the wines from the shop floor and the
restaurant racks into one list we now have eight pages
of wines to choose from. Set out in sixteen categories the list
offers you Champagne's, aromatics, dessert wines,
Grange verticals and so on at the
best prices in Melbourne, after all we have a very good bottle shop
to draw our wines from.
The list has wines
ranging from
1960 Grange to the
2007 42 Degree
South Pinot Grigio so there is everything from young and
old you could want.
Call the
Brasserie
on 03 9698 8008 to arrange your evening or to enquire about
function packages.
Old & Rare Wines - Benchmarking.
To be good is great. The wine world
has many "next big things" but to warrant being a big thing you have
to beat those producing the goods right now! The Tim Adams
Shiraz listed above is a benchmark wine, a wine you can use to
adjudge great or exceptional wines from because it is very very
good, we have other very very good wines that are hard to beat, such
as...
Boa
Pinga Tempranillo 2003,
Bendigo, Vic.
Better than the
competition!
In
another "blind" tasting this sub $15
Tempranillo beat more expensive cohorts
to become our benchmark. A great red drop and a good example of a lightly oaked
Tempranillo
wine that is perfect for anybody wanting to educate
themselves on what good wine should be.
$13.46 in a dozen | $14.95 per bottle

Forester Chardonnay 2004, Margaret
River, WA.
Great
Chardonnay!
The team at Forester
benchmark their chardonnay against the
Art Series Chardonnay of Leeuwin and
the outstanding
Cullen Chardonnay. This a ripper
for quality and complexity of a wine style that has become slightly
unfashionable, be bold and drink well, drink Forester.
$17.96 in a dozen | $19.95 per bottle
Bowen
Cabernet Sauvignon 1999,
Coonawarra, SA.
James Halliday 90
points!
It was a tough call between Bowen
and
Wynns as to who is the benchmark
Coonawarra Cabernet but we have slightly more Bowen to promote so
that tipped the scales.
Bowen's 2005 Cabernet is a top drop
but as we promote drinking with age this 1999 is better now!
$35.10 in a dozen | $39.00 per bottle

,
McLaren Vale, SA.
The Future is Merlot!
We have tasted some great Merlot wines
in the last few weeks,
Brown Brothers,
Craggy Range are two that spring to
mind, with the iconic
Irvine and popular
Blue Pyrenees another couple. The
future of Merlot may be this
Kay Brothers, outstanding fruit and
balance.
$26.96 in a dozen | $29.95 per bottle
,
Mornington Peninsula, Vic.
Mornington Peninsula.
Stonier wines are the Mornington
Peninsula Pinot Noir and Chardonnay producer. The Reserve and KBS
wines that come from the Stonier stable are the standard for
exceptional Mornington wine but with just six bottles of this 2000
be quick to enjoy the highest quality.
$50.00 per bottle

,
Clare Valley, SA.
Best
price for premium condition!
Grange,
Hill of Grace and
Astralis, may, arguably, be better than this
exceptional Shiraz but that is a very short and expensive list. To
be an exceptional Shiraz the wine must be better than
Wendouree and even the great wines
are often not as good as this 1992.
$180.00 per bottle

Saturday 3rd May @ the
Wine House - Cellar Table, 5-7pm, $75.
Ben Knight has a
simple
philosophy on wine: drink it and enjoy
it. Don't limit yourself to one colour or one style, as there is so
much out there to experience. Understanding the vagaries of
different wines make it all the more thrilling when you find
something truly special.
Now you have
the chance to learn about the vagaries of wine and the benefits of
wine aging at Wine House. Call the stone on (03) 9698 8001 as seats

Wine Trivia
Last week we
asked...
What are the four Classes (or categories) for Italian wine?
And the answer
from, lowest to highest, is:
VDT - VINO DA
TAVOLA ", maybe cheap but can be made from quality produce outside
the rules of the DOC or DOCG classes.
Wine with a Geographic indication -
"IGT - INDICAZIONE GEOGRAFICA TIPICA ". Label MUST declare the
region, type and vintage.
Wine of Controlled Origin - "DOC -
DENOMINAZIONE DI ORIGINE CONTROLLATA " , Label MUST show region,
type , vintage and declare production has followed strict
regulations.
Wine of Controlled Origin and
Guaranteed - "DOCG - DENOMINAZIONE DI ORIGINE CONTROLLATA E
GARANTITA " , the highest level for elite wines, rules as for DOC,
plus it has a guarantee from the Italian Government.
Thanks to the many
and varied answers but the winner was David. Your prize will be sent
soon.
This week we ask...
How many names for tempranillo can you find? The most verified
answers wins.
For your chance
to win a
$30
Lunch Special at the Brasserie, or a $30 voucher at Old & Rare Wines,
email your correct answer to
sales@winehouse.com.au. Extra
consideration is given to detailed answers where many correct
replies are received in a short time period.
Screw Cap to the Rescrew.
Last week at Wine House a bottle of wine
was served that some dinner guests believed to be
corked (the term used to describe a wine where bacteria in a cork
has attacked the
wine and spoiled it). While the wine had been checked by staff and
considered to be a sound, a second bottle of this $80 wine was
opened to remove any doubt, the diners were happy with this
decision. The out come. Neither
bottle was corked.
James Halliday recently
announced at a wine show that in the instance a wine being shown is
suffering from cork taint no substitute will be allowed. It was deemed
by the tasting panel that anyone still using cork to seal their
wines should know the risk and accept the faults resulting from the
closer, or be using an alternative closer.
To this end Wine House
orders, when possible, all wine be supplied to our cellars in screw
cap as we understand the pain of cork taint with all its financial
and enjoyment ramifications.
