How can I tastefully design a living room with both patterns (stripes, etc.) and prints (flowers)?
T. B. Augusta, GA

Though it's good to be careful about too many bold designs creating a busy look, patterns and prints often complement each other beautifully when they're done right. The key to a successful blend is to use prints and patterns from the same theme. For example, our Augustine collection uses bold striping with a rich floral pattern, and it works because both designs are part of a color family that goes with the coastal theme. Echo the accenting design in pillows, trims, or other subtle places to tie the look together. Don't feel limited to certain styles-use polka dots and a fleur-de-lis print for a French country look, or plaids and delicate florals for a warm antique feel-the possibilities are endless!

Tip of the Month:

The silhouette of your living room furniture may determine more of its overall style and vibe than you realize. Stay savvy about creating various décors by being knowledgeable about the statement that each silhouette makes. Below is a guideline for a few of the most common silhouettes, to help you achieve the look you want.

  • LawsonLawson: A fully padded, generally skirted design characterized by square seat cushions and trim, lowered arms accented with a slight roll. Often associated with casual and transitional styling.
  • ScatterbackScatterback: This boxed-cushion design is named for its unattached, large-scale coordinating back pillows. Perfect for a traditional look with a twist of unexpected flair.
  • CamelbackCamelback: One of the most traditional silhouettes, this 18th Century tight-back style is distinguished by a curve (resembling a camel's hump) along its back, often with exposed wood framing. Ideal for creating a slightly more formal ambiance.
  • TuxedoTuxedo: Reinvented by contemporary styling, a tuxedo silhouette features high, straight or flared arms that match or nearly match the height of the back. Typically complements streamlined décor with modern or transitional styling.
