More on bc
By Sandra Henry-Stocker, ITworld
In a previous column, we looked at bc, the surprisingly high precision
and big value capable Unix tool that you will find on most versions of
Unix today. The bc utility is not just a command line tool, however. You
can also write numerically intensive scripts in bc. The tool
incorporates enough syntax to assign values to variables, write and call
functions, collect responses from users and print annotated results.

http://cwflyris.computerworld.com/t/3028848/158421455/101019/0/
Master criminal Robert Echeverria and some of his friends cooked up a
diabolical scheme in which they pretended to be a corporate CEO and his
flunkies in order to scam awful fake Mexican food from Del Taco. Their
biggest mistake: bragging to YouTube -- and thus to the Internet at
large -- at their success in getting sub-$5 tacos for free. Now
Echeverria will be going to jail to contemplate his misdeeds.

Anti-Virus Is Dead: The Advent of the Graylist Approach to Computer
Protection
http://cwflyris.computerworld.com/t/3028848/158421455/100921/0/
This whitepaper, written by Hurwitz & Associates Partner Robin Bloor,
discusses how viruses, trojans, and other forms of malware persist only
because anti-virus, the main defense against them, is terribly flawed.
But now a far more effective technique is proliferating. Instead of
trying to recognize malicious software, application whitelists focus on
authenticating valid software. This approach enables whitelists to block
a far wider variety of malicious software than AV products could ever
hope to stop.
