WINDOWS MOBILE 6.1 POISED FOR CTIA LAUNCH?
Over 40,000 people have registered for next week's CTIA Wireless 2008,
touted as the "premier event representing the global wireless industry."
The show kicks off with a keynote by Microsoft EDD (Entertainment and
Devices Division) President Robert Bach, who will likely announce
Windows Mobile 6.1.

NOKIA TAPS WINDOWS CE FOR PND
Nokia has turned to Windows CE 5.0 for its first dedicated personal
navigation device (PND). The Nokia 500 features a 400MHz ARM9 processor,
4.3-inch touchscreen, GPS, Bluetooth, music and video playback
capabilities, an integrated FM transmitter, and lots of hands-free
calling features.

FEATURE-PACKED NAVIGATOR RUNS WINDOWS CE
Blaupunkt has added a high-end unit to its range of Windows CE 5.0-based
PNDs (personal navigation devices). The TravelPilot 300 features a
4.3-inch touchscreen display, 4GB of flash storage, Bluetooth, a voice
recorder, personal POI (points of interest) entry, and five video games.

WINDOWS CE-BASED PMP FEATURES GPS, DUAL CORES
IRiver has introduced a new combination portable media player (PMP) and
GPS device that runs Windows CE 5.0. The iRiver NV Life has dual
processor cores, a 7-inch screen, FM radio, and an integral receiver for
T-DMB (terrestrial digital multimedia broadcasting) television.

HYBRID NANO-PC PHONE RUNS WINDOWS XP
Here's a mobile phone that runs Windows -- not Windows Mobile, or
Windows CE, but actual Windows XP. Miu's "HDPC" (hybrid dual portable
computer) melds a palmtop PC powered by a 500MHz Via C7-M processor with
a mobile phone powered by a 200MHz ARM9-based system-on-chip.

WINDOWS PHONE MEETS NSA TOP SECRET STANDARDS
General Dynamics has released a Windows-based phone meeting Federal
standards for classified phone calls and secure network access. The
Sectera Edge meets National Security Agency (NSA) requirements for Top
Secret voice information, and provides access to the SIPRNet (secret
internet procotol router network).

MICROSOFT UPDATES .NET SOFTWARE FOR POS DEVELOPERS
Microsoft has updated a software library allowing POS (point of service)
developers to connect peripherals to .NET applications. Updating several
existing functions, POS for .NET v1.12 also adds device classes for
conveyor belts, electronic transaction management, doors/gates, item
dispensers, lights, and RFID scanners.

MICROSOFT RULES EMEA POINT-OF-SERVICE MARKET
Windows dominated the 2007 EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Asia) POS
(point of sales/service) terminal market, with a 61 percent share,
according to a report. WEPOS (Windows Embedded for Point of Service) and
Windows XP Embedded (XPe) were the fastest-growing OSes, with shipments
up by 254 and 56 percent, respectively.

MICROSOFT OUTLINES ESC WEST PARTICIPATION
Microsoft has detailed its participation in next month's Embedded
Systems Conference (ESC) West. Events devoted to Windows XP Embedded or
CE will include an address by Kevin Dallas, general manager of the
company's Windows Embedded business, plus 12 hands-on labs and 15
breakout sessions.

A THIRD OF ALL PHONES "SMART" IN FIVE YEARS
The market for smartphones will grow from around 10 percent of total
handset sales in 2007 to 31 percent in 2013, a new study says. Hailing
the "growing stature" of Windows Mobile, ABI Research adds that future
phones will boast such luxuries as touchpads, tilt/shock sensors, and
tactile feedback.

TAIWANESE IPC VENDOR SNAPS UP PC/104 ORIGINATOR
A Taiwanese industrial PC vendor plans to acquire one of the
oldest U.S. embedded board and system vendors. Adlink Technology
of Taipei will pay $20 million for all outstanding common shares of
Ampro Computer, a privately held 25-year-old company known for
originating the PC/104 and PC/104-Plus standards.
