Which SATA?
A reader writes:
"I have a confusing problem with choosing a SATA 1 or 2 controller. I have a Q-TEC 13434 SATA RAID controller (1.5 gigabits per second, PCI 32/66, Sil3112 chip) with a 250GB Hitachi Deskstar and a Maxtor 320GB SATA disk. Both disks are SATA 2 and can support TCQ (tagged command queuing) and NCQ (native command queuing). I don't know and can't find out whether the Q-TEC controller supports TCQ and NCQ. The question is whether it's wise to replace this controller with a Promise SATA 300 TX2/4 or something similar that supports 3-Gbps SATA and NCQ/TCQ. Will this change bring any noticeable extra speed to my computer? I've got 1.5GB of memory, a 2-GHz Athlon XP 2400+, and an ASUS A7n266c motherboard running XP. "
