  Inside: This Week in Autos
This week the N.Y. auto show opened up with a thud as the carmakers expressed concern that 2008 would be even worse than 2007. It's not hard to see why. Even during the recent boom years, U.S. auto makers were struggling. Now that the economy is going south and oil seems lodged at more than $100 a barrel people will be spending even less—especially on gas-guzzling trucks and SUVs. Even juggernaut Toyota is saying that it is unlikely to hit its sales targets. The new cars on display at this year's show came mainly from Asia, with the exception of three new models from Pontiac, two of which are rehashed Holdens from GM's Australian subsidiary. The fact that Detroit continues to push muscle seems out of touch with reality, which is that buyers want Camrys more than Camaros. Elsewhere this week we looked at the luxury cars that are most popular in China, compared the BMW 5 series with the Cadillac CTS, and reviewed the Saturn's hot little Euro-style hatchback, the Astra. Enjoy.

  IN YOUR FACE: APPLE'S DESIGN

Reader Brian Simpson Writes:

"There's an Apple philosophy for the look and feel of its product that doesn't come from a committee. Processes and creativity are great tools but they still need direction."

Ford Motor Co. is amidst an overhaul of its global product development process to make it more efficient and cost effective. The 2009 Fiesta, for example, to be launched in Europe this Fall and in North America a year later, is on one common global platform with slightly different "top-hats" of sheet metal and trim. closequote
