What's Your Favorite Story?

Hi Raquelle,

Do you remember the stories you read as a child? Maybe your parents tucked you into bed at night with Bible stories or fairy tales or Aesop’s Fables.

I loved stories of heroes who had to overcome obstacles to save the princess and the kingdom. Other favorites were ones with a mystery, or a quest for a great treasure. I still love to read sweeping tales of great adventure.

Then I pick up my Bible and read about Jesus’ life... there’s a marked difference. His heroes are farmers, housewives, and racial outcasts. He himself is an unlikely hero.

Jesus was born to a teenager, the son of a carpenter. His followers were fishermen and tax collectors, a motley crew. Anyone looking from the outside would wonder at the ability of this man to save a nation, let alone all of humanity with his death.

But that’s the strange beauty of God’s kingdom. It’s upside-down. It doesn’t make sense to those on the outside, only to those on the inside. And even those on the inside don’t always get it.

This Easter week, I remember the many seemingly "foolish choices (to the world) Jesus made for our sake. He chose to leave heaven and become a man. He chose to wait 30 years to start his ministry. He chose death on the cross in our place. He chose to continue his work through us.

Have a joyous Resurrection Sunday!

Modern Parables Vol. 1 - DVD

12 dramatic studies on the parables of Christ

Modern Parables is an original Bible study curriculum designed for people who like movies. It is the first in a planned series of film-driven studies on the parables. The 12-lesson study combines cinema and theory in short dramatic films that explain Jesus' parables. Modern Parables lets people grasp the parables at an immediate gut level. This emotional immediacy enables them to engage the Bible in a powerful and compelling way.

This box set consists of:

  • 3 DVDs - includes six parable films, six application videos each taught by a different pastor, six Director's Commentaries for teaching Cinema and Theology
  • 1 Teacher's Guide with 2 intro chapters, 12 complete lesson plans + 6 bonus lesson plans (108 p.)
  • 1 Student Book with 12 in-depth chapters on the parables (200 p.)
  • 1 Teacher's Prep CD with 12 teacher prep lessons

The Parable Films are uniquely designed to parallel the original parables, thereby driving viewers back to the Biblical text. Just watching the films helps teach the historical, grammatical, contextual and interpretive elements in the parables. The films are not meant to replace the text, but are intended to re-create in the viewer similar emotional, intellectual, and spiritual responses as that of Jesus' 1st-century listeners.

The Application Videos explain how the parables can be applied to our day-to-day lives. They are taught by insightful pastors representing different denominations.

The Director's Commentaries explore how cinema and theology were uniquely wedded in each of the films. When paired with the 6 bonus lessons found in the Teacher's Guide, they provide a unique insight into the way cinema provides new perpectives on our lives in God's Creation.

The Teacher's Guide provides step-by-step instructions on how to teach each lesson of Modern Parables. It also includes extensive background material on the parables and the theology of Biblical application.

The Student Book contains the actual Biblical study materials in 12 in-depth chapters on the parables. Each chapter is based on some of the best modern parabolic scholarship and is written in an engaging, easy-to-follow style. There are also six parallel tables that show the many comparisons between the parable film and the original text.

The Teacher's Prep CD is a series of 5-minute audio overviews on each lesson. They are intended to be listened to in the car or on a digital player just prior to teaching the class to help remind the teacher of the most important points.

Modern Parables was designed by a 15-year veteran teacher of both Adult and Youth Group Sunday School classes. The study is intended to be an all-inclusive package that provides everything you would need to thoroughly teach the parables. It is a modular study and can be taught in 6, 12, or 18 lessons (or anything in between).

"Have you ever wondered how Jesus might have told his parables in twenty-first century America? How would the characters have been portrayed? What modern cultural elements would have proved central? Compass Cinema’s portrayals are by far the most clear, riveting, superbly acted and biblically faithful contemporizations of Jesus’ parables that I have ever seen. The DVD comes complete with excellent written materials for individual or group study. I highly recommend this work.” Craig S. Blomberg, Ph.D., Distinguished Professor of New Testament, Denver Seminary

"The excellence with which the films were done, the accuracy of the film to the text, and the emotional connection with how 1st-century hearers would have felt are the three big benefits of this study. This series is a great way to show the undeniable relevance of the Bible to the video culture we live in today. I personally understand the parable of The Shrewd Manager better now than I ever have and it is most assuredly due to the lessons learned from Modern Parables." Industry Interview
Featured Filmmaker: Thomas Purifoy
by Angela Walker

Theologian, Naval officer, missionary, school director, marketer, screenwriter and producer are hats that Thomas Purifoy, Jr., has worn at some time in his adult life. In a process he calls “horribly painful,” he is close to finishing individual DVD releases of the Modern Parables film set.

Like many others, Thomas’ path to independent filmmaking was not at all linear, but rather organic and, on the surface at least, a little disjointed. Eventually it lead him to found Compass Cinema with a partner, and their first production of “Cinematic Theology:” Modern Parables, Living in the Kingdom of God.

Today we talked with Thomas about his journey, his study of the parables, and his ideas for the future.

CC.com: Why do you describe the process you’re in as painful?

Thomas:
There are so many little digital details that can go wrong when you’re working with something that has so many pieces. We’re trying to keep it clean from beginning to end, and make sure there are no errors. To provide a quality piece, we work in layers, so if we find an encryption error, it means going back through all the layers to find the problem.

We’re really excited about what it looks like. It’s a nice package, but it takes a lot of time to get it to that quality.

Weaker Economy = Stronger Box Office?

Hollywood thrives when the economy dives. It was true during the Depression, when Americans managed to scrape together nickels and dimes for an escape to the movies. And as the prospect of another recession looms, studio executives say this time is no different.

Rebuilding Culture for Christ in Cinema

Advent Film Group (AFG), founded to rebuild culture for Christ in cinema, heeds Dr. James Dobson's call for a new generation of Christian leaders "to carry the banner when this generation of leaders is gone," Dobson told an audience of nearly 1,400 at the National Religious Broadcasters (NRB) convention. "The question is, will the younger generation heed the call? Who will defend the unborn child in the years to come?"

The Passion Of The Christ - DVD - Widescreen

The Passion Of The Christ - DVD - Widescreen
by Tarashankar Bhattacharya

"My friend took me for this movie to a theater in the middle east in March 2004... I was a 22 year old hindu at the time... I cried like a baby throughout the movie... The Holy Spirit led me to a "born again" full gospel church in July, 2004... I entered the waters of baptism in October, 2004... and have been following the Lord ever since serving Him as His witness in the middle east... That night in the movie hall back in March 2004 was the turning point of my life... "

The Lazarus Phenomenon - DVD

The Lazarus Phenomenon - DVD
by Myrtle Subryan

"This film paints a very graphic picture of what awaits us when we die. I believe it’s a must see for everyone, the saved as well as the unsaved. I especially recommend it to all the outwardly religious people out there who worry more about rules and who do not really believe. The fact of the matter is we’re all going to live forever; where you choose to spend this forever is up to you. I encourage you to watch this film as soon as you get a chance and when you do, please do not put off giving your life to Christ if you haven’t already done so. Let Him be the Lord of your life. Tomorrow might be too late; you never know when it will be your turn to pass into eternity. May God bless you. "

The Apocalypse - DVD

"I LOVED this movie! It is nice to see such good quality with Christian movies. I will have to say though, if you don't understand or have not studied the book of Revelation you might be lost. I would suggest getting a good bible study on Revelation before watching this film so you can fully understand it and enjoy it. Sound quality was not the best...hard to understand at some parts. "

"I was surprised yet very pleased to see that Mark Hall from Casting Crowns is also on this DVD. I used this is my small group as a great substitute for worship time AND with the short speaker segments, it was a great conversation starter for the evening. I also gave my copy to our worship leader who is planning on using it in the main service. This is a very unique and amazing resource to have."

Dove Review:

Coming-of-age movies many times deal with the problems of young teens. This movie fits that category. Moondance is a young girl who has lost her father, has a mother who is over-protective and classmates that are snobs. Through all this the only person she feels she can talk to is her father at the cemetery. Then by accident a horse comes into her life that will change her life forever.

Inspired by a true story, "Moondance Alexander" is fantastic entertainment for the entire family. It's a truly delightful movie.
