Top News from EclipseCon 2008
This week at EclipseZone, it's difficult to see anything other than EclipseCon news. With much fanfare, the main news of the week is the emergence of Equinox as a top level project at Eclipse, namely the Eclipse RT Project. There's a lot to read about it and the best places to start are the newly launched Equinox Portal, or to read the exclusive interview with Ian Skerrett and Jeff McAffer that we ran here at EclipseZone. In Eclipse Equinox - Fulfilling the Promise of Write Once Run Anywhere I talked with both Ian and Jeff about what the announcement means, and got a little history of Eclipse Equinox and the involvement with the OSGi standard. It's going to be really interesting to see where this goes in the next few months. Already, it looks as if people are seeing applications for Eclipse beyond the desktop, as illustrated in Wayne Beaton's blog entry about the EclipseCon talk Server Side Eclipse - the Dynamic Server Platform based on OSGi.
There have been a few other interesting announcements as well during EclipseCon. The decision to make EclipseLink the reference implementation for the JSR 317 standard (Java Persistance API) is a great boost to the Eclipse community. When it comes to JCP, the Eclipse community has really been taking a leading role, and this announcement is further proof of this. Equinox is also the reference implementation for JSR291, with Tom Watson as spec lead for that JSR and co lead for the Equinox project.
SpringSource also announced that their support suite for the Spring portfolio will be based on Eclipse, most importantly leveraging the functionality that the Mylyn project provides to give first class user assistance. There's a beta available right now, and I'll be reporting more on this tool in an upcoming interview with lead developer Christian Dupuis. While on the topic of Mylyn, Tasktop has released the latest version of their task focused application. Talking to Mik Kersten about the release, the thing he is most proud of is how the team was able to respond to community feedback requests with this release.
The Community Awards Winners were announced on Monday night, with Chris Aniszczyk, the other EclipseZone Zone Leader winning the Top Committer Award. Ed Merx deservedly won the Ambassador award. Congratulations to all winners and finalists, in the awards. Hopefully everyone can build on the example set by all finalists in the awards to strengthen the community over the next year.
Of course, there has been other non-EclipseCon related content, with another great article from Suresh Krishna giving an overview of all the different dialog types that JFace provide - a useful article to bookmark for your own future use. Tomas Kramer has also produced the next article in his Effective Eclipse series, this time covering the Quick Fix functionality in Eclipse.
I also had an interesting discussion with one of the trainers in the RCP Training Series. One of the main points that I got from the interview was related to the OpenIT project at City Of Stuttgart - I was unaware that such a large scale RCP application existed.
EclipseZone will continue to provide news and feedback from EclipseCon and it looks like some of the announcements made at the conference will give us a lot of material to run with over the coming months as we wait patiently for Eclipse 3.4.
As always, we value contributions from the community. If you have anything that you would like to see on EclipseZone please let us know, or better yet - why not submit an article of your own!
Until Next Time,
James Sugrue

The major announcement this week at EclipseCon surrounds Equinox becoming a top level project. Just before the conference I caught up with two of the leading people in the Eclipse community to discuss this announcement and what it means. Ian Skerrett is Director of Marketing for the Eclipse Foundation, and a regular contributor to Eclipse Zone. Jeff McAffer is Equinox Project Lead, leads the RCP project and is one of the original architects of Eclipse.

You are in trouble, red lines are everywhere. There is no easy way out, so you just either start googling what went wrong, or start a copy&pasting session. If it is so smart, it can tell me that I have an error in my code, why cannot it just fix it?Let me introduce you to a powerful ally: Quick Fix.

The JFace framework of Eclipse provides many standard and useful dialogs and a framework to build custom dialogs and wizards. When the standard dialogs seems to be too simple for your plugin or RCP developement, one can extend the standard dialogs to suit their own needs. The aim of this article is to provide example oriented approach to dialogs and see in depth of all frequently used dialogs.

On Monday, EclipseCon 2008 kicks off in Santa Clara, and it looks like it's going to be the best yet. Although it kicks off on St Patrick's Day, the Irish national holiday - I'll be working hard to ensure EclipseZone has up-to-date content with all the latest news and announcements from the conference.

Your typical day consists of writing new code, running local tests, and then integrating your changes with those of your team members. If you are going the "agile" way, you would synchronize with your team by updating your sources with the changes of others. Then you re-run all tests and check-in this state to the VCS. As you run tests on your personal desktop, this obviously blocks your
work. The natural consequence is that you do not run all tests as often
you should run them. As a result, you get lower code
quality and a jeopardized schedule.
