Dear Criss,
The hunt is on! Hidden in the Wine House web site is an
Easter egg,
buy the bottle featured with the photo and receive two bottles for
the price of one. While hunting you can search the site for a bottle to
enjoy in the
Brasserie, a bottle to cool down with (like a
1978
Grange), cool global concern by helping Earth Hour and Oxfam, or
just be cool by attending the
Wendouree dinner. Are you cool?
We hope you enjoy,
From the Team at Wine House
Closed
Easter: The Wine House
Brasserie
and Old & Rare store are closed on
the Easter Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. We'll be refreshed, chocolated out, and ready to look after your food and wine needs
again on Tuesday. Get your wines delivered this week for the long
weekend.
This week at Wine House...
Wine is emotive. This week we sold a
bottle of 1989 Penfolds Grange to a customer buying the wine for his
father who brought the family out to Australia in 1989. It was a big
risk which paid off for the family.
Wine is as much about the land and the
year that land experienced as it is about the people around it. We
hope you enjoy your wines from Wine House whatever the emotion
behind it is.

Easter Egg Hunt.
One of our wines has had it's photo
replaced with a picture of an Easter egg (see left). If you search our web
site, find the bottle, and place an order for this wine you'll
receive two bottles in the mail for the price of one.
It is a simple plan that we hope will
allow you to
get some Easter joy from Wine House. To help your search we recommend you
keep in mind the Wine House mantra of supporting and encouraging old
and rare Australian wine (and the link has a handy clue).
Start your hunt here!
Please e-mail
sales@winehouse.com.au or call the store on 03 9698 8001about
any of our wines.
Brasserie

How much is corkage?
The restaurant is exciting with Wine
Dinner's and creative dishes being announced regularly. The exciting
times continue as we now have one of the biggest wine lists in the
world! The
Brasserie's current wine list has been extended to
include all the wine in our Old & Rare wine store. If you come into
the wine store
before your
Brasserie
meal, or call ahead, you can
make a wine choice from our bottle shop range and enjoy it up stairs
with just a $20 corkage for the bottle.
While our current wine menu is more than
adequate for those who want to pick a wine at the table, but for
those who intend to get deeply into the wine experience we have a
much larger wine list at your
disposal, just be sure to make your choice before the bottle shop
staff close for the day.

Brasserie

Earth Hour & Wine House.
Wine House is taking part in Earth
Hour on the 29th of March as we join the world in turning our lights
off for one hour. Those who pass by this day please note that the
flood lights on the
Brasserie
are controlled by the council so will
remain on. For more information on this global cause visit www.earthhour.org.
Old & Rare Wines - Cool down.
This past week has been
hot and Wine House has delayed many parcels to prevent heat damage.
To help prevent heat damage to yourself we have a range of cool
wines to cool down with, such as...
Seppelt
Fleur de Lys Sparkling White NV,
Great Western, Vic.
Call me bubbles
dear, everyone does.
The
Seppelt house made its name with it's well crafted sparkling wine
range, from sparkling shiraz, to the
Salinger, to the
vintage Fleur
de Lys. The
Fleur de Lys NV is wonderful value bubbles with all you
want at the price, refreshing fruit with fizz.
$11.66 in a dozen | $12.95 per bottle

Koonara Emily May Rose 2005,
Coonawarra, SA.
I need you cool, are you
cool?
There are other Rose
wines to choose from, like
Hamilton or
Chapel Hill, but one fine
name to select is the
Koonara offering with rose petal and cherry
aromatic and just dry palate that matches a salmon dip and crackers
very well. For the hot dinner party or BBQ.
$15.26 in a dozen | $16.95 per bottle
Shaw
& Smith Sauvignon Blanc 2007,
Adelaide Hills, SA.
Get to the chopper!
The 2007 vintage across Australia was a
struggle, low yields making little wine, and the first signs of the
tough road ahead is the short supply of Shaw & Smith's Sauvignon
Blanc. No more of this famous wine is available from the winery so
get in while stock exists.
$22.46 in a dozen | $24.95 per bottle

,
Bendigo, Vic.
Tapa, tapa tapa.
Think of Spain and think of dried meats,
olive's, fresh bread dipped in oil. Now think of the perfect wine to
drink as you chat to your friends and enjoy the food and sun.
Tempranillo is the wine to drink and
Pondalowie is Australia's
greatest producer,
their shiraz is good too.
$22.46 in a dozen | $24.95 per bottle
,
Margaret River, WA.
Cool climate.
This has cool climate spice, meats and berry
fruit, all with the well cellared age you expect from Wine House wines. You
could also enjoy a
Lost Valley,
Warramate or
Port Phillip cool
climate shiraz. They are all great wines defying the trend of high
alcohol and American oak.
$24.26 in a dozen | $26.95 per bottle

,
Eden Valley, SA.
Cool
your heels.
You may
not know this but Wine House checks auction sites to compare the
pricing of our old and rare wines. It has come to our attention that
a misnomer must exist that auction's are
cheap. For example check out our pricing on aged
Penfolds,
Rockford,
Dalwhinnie,
and
Giaconda wines. If you buy from our retail store you can save $10 to $100
based on a
recent auction. Check us out before you pay too much for a bottle.
$650.00 per bottle

Oxfam & Pondalowie.
Some friends of Wine
House are preparing to walk a 48 hour trek around Melbourne's
outskirts to raise
money for Oxfam,
and one of Wine House's other friends,
Pondalowie
vineyards, is
helping to raise money by donating wine and glasses as raffle
prizes. Purchase a $5 ticket and not only do the proceeds go to
Oxfam but you can
win gifts from
Pondalowie. Wine House is helping
too, if you buy a dozen bottles of
Pondalowie
from our web site
we'll give you three free tickets into the raffle draw, on top of
the normal wine discounts for a dozen purchase. It is all for
charity and it is all good for wine.
The prize draw is on the
10th of April and winners will be notified by phone call.
Events - Wendouree Dinner.
Thursday 27th March @ the
Wine House - Brasserie.
First Course served at 7:30pm, $150.
The
wines of
A.P.Birks Wendouree Cellars are
inspirational. Last years Wendouree dinner was one of the most
memorable events for 2007. This year, with older wines and a greater
food budget, the Wendouree dinner event is likely to be equal, or
greater, to the 2007 occasion.
There are just a few spots left to this night and expressions of
interest in a second dinner will be most welcome should it sell out.
Please call the store, (03) 9698 8001, to purchase your spot and
follow this link to the
Wine Dinner web page to see the
menu for this and other up coming events.
Wendouree Dinner,
$150.00, Thursday 27 Mar 2008, Brasserie, first course served at 7.30pm.
Only payment can secure
your seat and 48 hours notice is required should you be unable to
attend.
Gift vouchers and other
promotional offers are not valid with this event.
Wine Trivia
Last week we
asked...
What caused the creation of port?
There were four
good answers received last Tuesday from Sandra, Jean-Claude, Peter
and Marilyn but the best answer came from Robert...
"Port is a wine
style that originated from Portugal's Douro Valley and takes its
name from the city Oporto. In 1678 Britain declared war on France
and as a result a shortage of wine in Britain resulted. Britain and
Portugal under the agreement of "perpetual friendship" signed with
Portugal in 1373 had a ready made replacement, however the quality
was not the same. Desperate for a decent drink they (British
merchants) traveled inland to the Duoro Valley were they found good
but astringent red wines. In order to stabalise these wines for
shipment back to Britain they fortified them with brandy. These
wines were not highly thought of at the time but port was born.
Who says war is good for nothing!"
Thanks Robert, you
win the $30 voucher and it will be in the mail today. Some wine
records mention an abby in Oporto when the wines were being
fortified by brandy and this where the British learnt to fortify
other wines, but whether a divinity was the original brain behind
the idea is not clear.
This week we ask...
I am picked early. I can be fermented in oak or stainless steel. Singularly I can be
made into a Champagne, but not by Bollinger. What grape am I and why
does Bollinger have so little to do with it?
For your chance
to win a
$30
Lunch Special at the Brasserie, or a $30 voucher at Old & Rare Wines,
email your correct answer to
sales@winehouse.com.au. Extra
consideration is given to detailed answers where many correct
replies are received in a short time period.

Biodynamic Rubbish
The roll of Biodynamics in the Australia wine scene has been given a
fair bit of coverage in recent times. As vineyards try to get "back
to nature" and market their wines as "being all natural". The
oblivious cynic might call this hippy nonsense as part of the theory
is based around picking the grapes when the phases of the moon are
in the right cycle. Fact is the moon has only been in the right
phase for picking in the last week, at the height of the heat wave.
Without naming names, for the protection of some wine friends,
reliable reports have come to Wine House that grapes are being
picked with potential alcohol reading above 20%. Non biodynamic
harvesters had started pulling their grapes off vines weeks ago,
when sugar levels were more reasonable. The proof will be in the
pudding so we shouldn't be too harsh yet but the signs are not good
for wines from 2008. Please direct complaints over this side bar
article to
luke@winehouse.com.au.
