Online Surveys Hints and Tips

Dear Harry,

Survey data is so exciting! Really, it is. If you've conducted an online survey, then you know what I mean. There is nothing like watching those responses come in one by one (refresh, refresh) and discovering what the people on your list are really thinking.

After the initial joy of hearing back from your customers, subscribers, members, or whoever it is you are surveying, the next step is to analyze the results and see what you can learn and take action on. The road to great analysis starts at the very beginning of the process with building a quality survey, which includes being clear on your objective, asking the right questions, and much more.

In this issue of Hints & Tips Online Surveys, you'll learn how to conduct effective surveys to give you data that is not only exciting, but highly useful, helping you to make important short- and long-term business decisions.

Are there survey-related topics you want us to cover?

Best wishes,
Amy Black

12 tips for creating winning online surveys

By Eric Groves, SVP, Worldwide Strategy & Market Development, Constant Contact

Who's on first? Okay, so I am showing my age, but a poorly written survey can lead to results that make you feel like Costello trying to get an answer out of Abbott in that hilarious routine. So how do you create a survey that won't strike out? Here are 12 tips to get you started.

1) Start at the end

Ask yourself what you really want to learn from your survey. Keep in mind that your objective can be simple (understanding how well you are serving your customers) or complex (discovering new directions for your business). Once you know what you want to get out of your survey, you will have a much better idea of the questions you need to ask to get there.

2) Commit the time and resources to do it right

Proper planning and allocation of the necessary time and resources are vital to making your survey a success. Commit time for planning your surveys and you will get results that you can take action on.

3) Ask only what you need to know, not all that you want to know

What is it that you need to know right now to make good business decisions? Remember, you can always create another survey to cover other topics or to get more detailed information. Avoid the feeling that you need to get all the answers right away. That often results in one really long survey and a lower percentage of completed surveys (see the next tip).

Online Survey Success Stories

The Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce
Chamber uses online surveys to gauge member satisfaction and aid with planning

Chamber Newsletter

Connecticut's Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce is all about helping their members succeed. In fact, according to Nancie Gray, Vice President of Marketing and Special Events, the Chamber will do almost anything they can to support the 600 local businesses that rely on the resources they provide.

Nancie says, "Whether we're helping with research or to make a connection; whatever they need, we're there to help as much as we can."

Challenge: Delivering Quality Programming with Limited Resources

Servicing 600 members is no small task for a staff of two full-time and three part-time employees. Nancie says her greatest challenge is, "Time...having enough time to get it all done. There's a lot on our plate on any given day. It's things like Constant Contact that help us."

For a service-oriented organization like the Greater Valley Chamber, getting feedback from members is top priority. The Chamber hosts a large number of events and special programs that depend on the members' input for success. Nancie used paper surveys, but the response was minimal. Nancie says, "You send them out in the mail, you don't get a lot back."
