LINUX-BASED NAS STORES 2TB
LaCie has shipped a dual-disk, 2TB version of its Linux-based network
attached storage (NAS) appliance. The latest "2big Network" device runs
an in-house version of Linux called LaCix, and can act as a small
business server for FTP, backup, and file-sharing.

ANALYST SMASHES THE INTEL ATOM
Predictions that Intel's Atom processor will defeat ARM in the embedded
market are premature, writes an analyst in EETimes. Atom may prove to be
a little faster, writes Kenton Williston, but ARM chips are cheaper,
more power efficient, smaller -- and they're here now.

READER REJECTS SEVERED, FAKE FINGERS
Futronic has announced an FBI-approved fingerprint scanner claimed
capable of distinguishing live human fingers from dead and fake fingers.
The Linux-compatible FS88 emits a "special signal" that, in conjunction
with a sensor and an algorithm, can reportedly differentiate living
finger "signatures" from those of other materials.

BIOS BOOTS TO LINUX IN ONE SECOND
Firmware company General Software announced that it is selling
customized, quick-booting versions of its Linux-compatible BIOS firmware
to the medical device industry. The company says its "Embedded BIOS with
StrongFrame Technology" can boot to lilo (Linux loader) in less than a
second.

TINY $80 SBC RUNS DEBIAN LINUX
KwikByte is shipping its smallest, lowest-cost single-board computer
(SBC) yet. Designed for general purpose computing, embedded controls,
machine vision, remote monitoring, and database/web servers, the
Debian-based KB9260 measures a wee 3.1 x 3.1 inches and costs only $80
in volume.

RE-NAMED GRAPHICS FRAMEWORK TAPPED FOR MEDIA STREAMER
Trolltech has renamed its embedded GUI stack and development framework,
and is boasting of a design win in the multimedia streamer space. Qt for
Embedded Linux, formerly Qtopia Core, formerly Qt/Embedded, was used by
Roku Labs in an as-yet unannounced Internet streaming media player,
according to Trolltech.

UWB READY FOR BLAST-OFF AT LAST?
After overestimating the early market for ultra-wideband (UWB) in 2006,
ABI Research now says the short-range wireless networking technology is
finally ready for take-off. Shipments of UWB in laptops, periphals,
consumer electronics devices, and eventually mobile handsets will reach
400 million by 2013, forecasts ABI.

WIND RIVER CMO DISCUSSES REORG AND FUTURE OF LINUX
In an interview about two weeks ago with LinuxDevices, Wind River CMO

WIND RIVER PROFITS DOWN, BUT LINUX BOOKINGS SOAR
Wind River's 4Q 2008 earnings showed expected revenue growth to $84.3
million and a net loss of $2 million. However, Linux bookings were up 66
percent, with Linux expected to deliver over $50 million in fiscal 2009,
about 14 percent of the projected $365 million total.

FREESCALE TO DISCUSS NEW CHIPS AT TECH FORUMS
Freescale Semiconductor and Linux development partner MontaVista have
announced dates and locations for five Freescale Technology Forum (FTF)
events in 2008. The series begins with a June event in Orlando, where
technical sessions are scheduled for three as-yet unannounced embedded
chips: the i.MX35, i.MX37, and the MPC8536.

LINUX-POWERED MINI-LAPTOP GETS LARGER DISPLAY
Asus announced an upgraded version of its "Eee" mini-laptop with a
larger 8.9-inch screen. The Eee PC 900 also doubles memory to 1GB,
boosts the screen resolution, increases solid-state storage to 12GB --
and raises the price from $400 to $600.

LOW-COST LAPTOP RUNS LINPUS LINUX
Thai systems integrator Norhtec is preparing to release a sub-$300
ultra-mini PC (UMPC) laptop based on a Quanta design. Aimed at the
developing-country market, the so-called Gecko Laptop is being built by
Quanta and runs Linpus Linux Lite, a new distribution designed for
small-screen mini-PCs.
