ATOM-BASED UMPC RUNS WINDOWS VISTA
Panasonic has announced what appears to be the first Windows computer
using Intel's newly branded "Atom" processor. The Toughbook CF-U1
ultra-mobile PC (UMPC) has a 5.6 inch touchscreen display, integral
keyboard and numeric keypad, optional cameras and barcode reader, and
runs Windows Vista.

ANALYST SMASHES INTEL'S ATOM
Predictions that Intel's Atom processor will defeat ARM in the embedded
market are premature, writes an analyst in EETimes. Atom may prove to be
a little faster, writes Kenton Williston, but ARM chips are cheaper,
more power efficient, smaller -- and they're here now.

WINDOWS CE-BASED E-READER HAS 9.7-INCH DISPLAY
Netronix has announced a Windows CE 5.0-based e-reader that also plays
MP3 audio files. The EB-300 features a 9.7-inch "E Ink" touchscreen
display with four gray scales, 1200 x 825 pixel resolution, WiFi,
Bluetooth, and an SD expansion slot.

"VIDEO WALL" DISPLAYS RUN XPE
Samsung has introduced 70- and 82-inch flat panel displays incorporating
computers running Windows XP Embedded (XPe). Targeting signage
applications including video walls with up to 25 monitors, the 700DXn
and 820DXn have 1920 x 1080 resolution, and sport dual-core AMD Athlon
64 X2 CPUs.

MICROSOFT TO ADD NATIVE NFC TO WINDOWS MOBILE
Microsoft and RFID vendor Sirit have announced plans to collaborate on
adding proximity technologies to Windows Mobile. The agreement aims to
integrate near field communications (NFC) into the operating system,
providing contactless payment, secure access, control of home
entertainment systems, and other features.

FIRST U.S. EVDO-A PHONE?
Sprint has announced what it claims to be the first U.S. EV-DO Rev. A
phone, supporting data rates of 3.1Mbps downstream and 1.8Mbps upstream.
The newly revised HTC Mogul also boasts WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, a 2MP
camera, QVGA display, and the Windows Mobile operating system.

JAPANESE WINDOWS MOBILE PHONE OFFERS WORLDWIDE 3G
Japanese carrier Softbank has released an HTC-manfactured Windows Mobile
6 phone that features 3G/HSDPA connectivity and a slide-out keyboard.
The X03HT also includes WiFi wireless networking, Bluetooth, dual
cameras, a 2.4-inch display, and "picture letter" capabilities.

3G WINDOWS MOBILE 6 PHONE HAS DUAL CAMERAS
O2 has released a Windows Mobile phone that features dual GSM/GPRS/EDGE
and 3G HSDPA/UMTS cellular radios along with dual cameras and a
slide-out keyboard. The Xda Atmos also includes WiFi wireless
networking, Bluetooth, a 2.4-inch display, and video recording capabilities.

WINDOWS MOBILE PHONE RECORDS CALLS, SIMULATES AMBIENT NOISE
Gigabyte Communications announced a Windows Mobile-based phone it says
can not only record calls and messages, but also camouflage a user's
location by simulating background noises. The Gsmart MW998 offers
quad-band GSM telephony, features WiFi and Bluetooth, and has a 2.8-inch
VGA touchscreen display, says Gigabyte.

Futronic has announced an FBI-approved fingerprint scanner claimed
capable of distinguishing live human fingers from dead and fake fingers.
The FS88 emits a "special signal" that, in conjunction with a sensor and
an algorithm, can reportedly differentiate living finger "signatures"
from those of other materials.

READER SURVEY SHOWS ARM OUTPACING X86

UWB READY FOR BLAST-OFF AT LAST?
After overestimating the early market for ultra-wideband (UWB) in 2006,
ABI Research now says the short-range wireless networking technology is
finally ready for take-off. Shipments of UWB in laptops, periphals,
consumer electronics devices, and eventually mobile handsets will reach
400 million by 2013, forecasts ABI.

Raspberry Software has announced software aimed at integrating phones
and PCs that run Microsoft operating systems. "True Connect" lets users
