Please join us Friday, March 16th, 2008, at 6PM as novelist Laura Joh Rowland (author of the Sano Ichiro mystery series) signs her new book, THE SECRET ADVENTURES OF CHARLOTTE BRONTË,
an epic, world-at-stake thriller starring the legendary 19th century
author and her equally famous family. It's a tour of Victorian England
from gutter to palace, featuring a hero who combines Mr. Rochester with
Agent 007 and a villain whose devious schemes threaten the very fabric
of the British Empire. Charlotte Brontë is plunged headlong into the
sort of thrilling adventures and passionate romance she never actually
experienced, but secretly craved.
"Rowland is a proven creator of finely drawn societies that are
exotic to our modern eyes, with a dozen books in her popular Sano
Ichiro samurai detective series set in 17th century Japan. Her
portrayal of the daily details in 1840s England is equally sure. And
there's a lot of action in this book, too. And after you finish this engaging read, you're likely to wander
through your life preoccupied by when you can return to Charlotte's
world." - Susan Larson, The Times-Picayune

The Day Freedom Died
By Charles ***
Book Signing & Author Talk
Sunday, March 16 at 2:00 PM Octavia Books - 513 Octavia St. - New Orleans
Please join us for a
Sunday afternoon with Washington Post editorial writer Charles *** who
will talk about and sign his new book, THE DAY FREEDOM DIED: The Colfax Massacre, the Supreme Court, and the Betrayal of Reconstruction.
When Captain Thornton
Jacobs stopped his steamboat in Colfax, Louisiana, on Easter Sunday in
1873, he found the courthouse in flames and the riverbanks littered
with dark bodies. A heavily armed guard boarded his trade vessel and
smugly informed him that a battle had occurred; a small army of
ex-Confederates had smoked out and slaughtered more than sixty former
slaves holed up in the town's courthouse. The Colfax Massacre, as it
was called, marked the bloodiest day of post-Civil War Reconstruction.
To many it would mark the last battle of the Civil War. Charles ***
transforms this nearly forgotten incident into a riveting historical
saga.
"***, who covered the Supreme Court for the Washington Post, is
skillful at interpreting legal events within the broad sweep of
history, bringing a flair for courtroom drama to these long-ago
proceedings, showing the long shadow they cast toward the future." - Susan Larson, The Times-Picayune To reserve signed copies, please call Octavia Books at 504-899-7323. |
