Wine House Cocktail Party, November 2006

Dear Criss,

The world of Wine House.
Howard Park, Western Australian Tasting, Bass Fillet steak, Australian aged wine, Wendouree wine dinner, and Trivia. The world is not complete without the enjoyment of wine.

We hope you enjoy,

From the Team at Wine House

This week at Wine House - Penfolds Bin 707 Cabernet 1998

Howard Park Cabernet Merlot 1994!
Jeremy Oliver 96 points!

As the end of the last working week approached our eyes began to dart around the shelves for some 'educational tasting' options. Deciding on something rather special, with some considerable age, we found the Howard Park Cabernet Merlot 1994.

As Howard Park stated themselves at the time of production, since their inception in 1986, this 1994 Cabernet Merlot was looking as though it may be the best that they had produced in their short, 8 year, life. After opening this bottle, the cork popping out in absolutely immaculate condition and on trying the first word on the tasting sheet was "GEM!".

Even in its youth, this wine was considered an epic wine with everything to be expected from a top class international Bordeaux blend. 14 years on, this wine is nothing short of amazing. The fruit, which is a gorgeous blend of mulberry, dark cherry and even a hint of wild raspberry, is incredibly ripe - it leaves your mouth watering. Beautiful layers of mocha, mint and a refreshing character continue to lengthen this wine. The oak is completely seamless and integrated. The tannin is refined, but still present. What began as a dense lurking presence that hid most of its attributes is now coming out of the shadows. We would expect a further 3-4 years development to continue to open this wine up. Such a stunner!

$80.00 per bottle

You can purchase this wine now, or if you have already purchased a ticket you can taste it at our sold out Western Australia Tasting on this Saturday, 15th March @ 2pm.

This week at The Wine House Brasserie -

Bass Valley Eye Fillet!
Brasserie this week for Lunch or Dinner.

The Brasserie is using fresh ingredients for fresh ideas. This week our Chef Matt has created a stunning Eye Fillet dish, cooked to perfection, that will feature as this week's Special Dish.

Sourcing stunning Eye Fillet steaks from the Bass Valley in Phillip Island the fillet is cooked, as per your desire, and served with succulent, hand made ox-tail ravioli and a cassoulet of vegetables. Just the thought of it makes your mouth begin to water!

Only on the menu for this week, the Bass Eye Fillet is $38 for a main serving and the Old & Rare store recommends matching it with a glass of Kay Brothers Cabernet Sauvignon from the wine list.

Call the Brasserie on 03 9698 8008 to book a table.

Old & Rare Wines - The Old and The New!

As we have said before, not every wine needs five, ten or fifteen years aging in the cellar to be at their best. The Wine House has a great selection of aged and drink now wines for you to enjoy at many different price points. Here are some suggestions below...

McWilliams Barwang Chardonnay 2004, Barwang, NSW.

Medals Galore!

Barwang is situated along the southwest slopes of the Great Dividing Range, at an altitude of 520m. This Chardonnay is loaded with primary fruit flavours, subtle soft butterscotch and creamy oak characters, supported by a flinty, restrained clean acid finish. Dripping with medals - its a steal at this price! $17.96 in a dozen | $19.95 per bottle

Mollydooker '2 Left Feet' Shiraz Cabernet Merlot 2006, McLaren Vale, SA.

Wine Spectator 90 points!

Taking the world by storm is Mollydooker. The 2005 vintage was selected by Robert Parker as the 2nd "Best Value Wine in the World under $20". The 2006 looks even better as the vintage produced tremendous fruit. Check out their video of the "Mollydooker shake"!
$22.46 in a dozen | $24.95 per bottle

Yering Station Shiraz Viognier 2006, Yarra Valley, Vic.

Full, clean and luscious!

Victoria's first vineyard, Yering Station, was originally planted in 1838. Not bad! This wine may rival the esteemed '05 vintage. Structured with precision and intensity. Lots of flavour & pristine fruit with classic Shiraz Viognier characters. Very long and focused. Great value!!

$22.46 in a dozen | $24.95 per bottle

Warrenmang Grand Pyrenees Cabernet Shiraz Merlot 2001, Pyrenees, VIC.

Lively, zesty and luscious!

30 year old vines, hand picking and a gentle basket press help craft this classy wine. Each variety was fermented, pressed and matured separately in French and American oak for 2 years. Really coming into its own with a few years of bottle age.

$26.96 in a dozen | $29.95 per bottle

Taylors St Andrews Riesling 2002, Clare Valley, SA.
Jeremy Oliver 93 points!

In 1999 the first of the Taylors St. Andrews wines were released, including a Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Shiraz and Riesling. The Riesling is one of their standouts, with Clare Valley producing some of the best in the country. Lime, honey and toast abound!!

$30.56 in a dozen | $33.95 per bottle

Irvine The Baroness II Cabernet Blend N.V., Eden Valley, SA.

Merlot blend from the Merlot King!

Blended with three grapes from three different years, the Baroness epitomises the phrase "The sum of all is greater than the parts". Fruit characters are a mixture of dried tomato, plum, mulberry & blackcurrant, with floral notes of roses & spearmint. Captivating!
$35.10 in a dozen | $39.00 per bottle

Events - Wendouree dinner.
Thursday 27th March
@ the Wine House - Brasserie.

Entree at 7:30pm, $150.

The wines of A.P.Birks Wendouree Cellars are inspirational. Last years Wendouree dinner was one of the most memorable events for 2007. This year, with older wines and a greater food budget, the Wendouree dinner event is likely to be equal, or greater, to the last occasion.

Old vines from the Clare Valley make for "the iron fist in a velvet glove" (James Halliday) style that has been mimicked across the Australian wine scene (Tim Adams, Wild Duck Creek etc) and has caused Wendouree wines to completely sell out via the cellar's newsletter prior to release. Thanks to our private collector database we have some aged and current release Wendouree wines to taste at this months wine dinner.

Please call the store, (03) 9698 8001, to purchase your spot and follow this link to the Wine Dinner web page to see the menu for this and other up coming events.

Wendourre Dinner, $150.00, Thursday 27 Mar 2008, Brasserie, entree at 7.30pm.

Only payment can secure your seat and 48 hours notice is required should you be unable to attend.

Gift vouchers and other promotional offers are not valid with this event.

Wine Trivia

Last week we asked...

By 1920 a nasty bug destroyed almost all of Northern Hemispheres vine plantings, what protected Chile and the Eastern United States from infection?

Congratulations Joe. While most answers correctly identified that the Eastern United States were largely planted to vines resistant to nasty bug (aka Phylloxera) the stumbling block for most was the correct answer for Chile. It was the sandy soil of Chile that made it hard for Phlloxera to spread and therefore not destroy vineyard as it did through out other parts of the United States and most of Europe.

This question also carries with it a warning. If you are traveling between vine regions in Australia, specifically if you plan to visit vineyards, please clean your shoes and dirt out of car tires. Phylloxera is hard to identify until the vines start dieing and once a vineyard has the nasty bug it means the death of the vineyard. Always assume a vineyard has the bug so no vineyard contracts the bug.

This week we ask...

What caused the creation of port?

For your chance to win a $30 Lunch Special at the Brasserie, or a $30 voucher at Old & Rare Wines, email your correct answer to sales@winehouse.com.au.  Extra consideration is given to detailed answers where many correct replies are received in a short time period.
