Illness In America The Worst Flu Season Ever? Melinda Ledman
Turns out, everyone I know has had the worst flu season
they've had in years. I believe my family got off easy with only two
strands of illness keeping us down for five weeks between January and
February. Others had it much worse. At least two friends of mine say
that their families have been sick since November. Check out the
FluView Map from the CDC.
So what in the world is going on? How can a nation with some of the
best healthcare and medicinal treatment on the p***t be chronically
suffering at the hands of tenacious illnesses? The many
strains of flu viruses that attack each year are the least of our
problems. Cancer, heart disease, AIDS, and a host of other
illnesses are killing us off by the millions each year. What is with
this illness epidemic?Read more of Melinda's analysis of this disturbing trend at HJ's Back Page...

Of Thrill... and Victory! The Latest Observations on Sport in Film Mike Gunn
Spring Training
At Least We're the Best At Something!!
Mike Gunn | 03/07/08 What are we going to do with our "Yankees
Suck" t-shirts, and our bitterness toward Bucky Dent, George
Steinbrenner and Bill Buckner? I guess we can deal with the obligatory
burning of the city and rioting justified by our need to express our
inner child's tortured self.
War/Dance
Forget the Doggone Trophy!
Darrel Manson | 03/05/08 In War Dance the success is not in winning;
success is that these children have found something to fill the empty
places of their lives. For these children, music and dance gives
meaning to their lives-lives that we might think should be broken
beyond repair.

The Week In Movies
10,000 B.C. (2008)
More than a Legend?
Elisabeth Leitch
The interesting thing about the movie is that instead of setting its
hero on a pedestal for us to look up to, it almost tells us that its
hero could just as well be any of us, and its story of change and
freedom one that is just as possible today as it was in 10,000 B.C.
College Road Trip (2008)
Sunny Optimism is Hard Work
Greg Wright
Even if this particular Road Trip
goes off into the weeds and tumbles down an embankment, audiences can
take away these two things: words of sound advice, and one hoot of a
character, courtesy of grown-up Donny Osmond.
Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day (2008)
What Are We Living For?
Elisabeth Leitch
When God reaches out his hand to us, when he offers us his love, when
he tells us that with him we will be the greatest we will ever be, are
we willing to let go of the things we've always thought we needed, and
instead take hold of the only thing we actually need?
Bank Job, The (2008)
Got Secrets?
Elisabeth Leitch
The trouble with secrets is that they carry a power unlike anything
else. Their grip on us begins because we cannot see their exposure as
anything other than our ruin. Their strength grows because we are
constantly reminded of every single thing that could lead to ruin. |

New On DVD
101 Dalmatians (1961)
Lost and Found
Yo
101 Dalmatians
is a unique film in the Disney catalog, and it's finally being given
the treatment it so richly deserves with a special, two-disc edition.
Whether you're an old fan of the film or if you're just thinking about
getting it for the kids, this is one you don't want to miss.
Alive: Music & Dance (2008)
Cause for Hope, Time for Joy
Greg Wright
The usually justified knock on Protestant Christianity is that its art sucks. Well, Tesh does not. And neither does Alive: Music and Dance. If you've got an axe to grind with Christianity, just lay it aside for a bit and get back to the battle later.
Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium (2007)
Amaze Yourself Half to Death
CoachZ
My 7-year-old son said, "This movie amazes me half to death." So
apparently there is something about it that interested him as well,
thus the recommendation I have for it. Some of it haunts me and I don't
know why yet, even after watching it a few times. |

Pop Gospel Artist Riffs On Making Music And Singing Theology
Jacob Sahms | 03/09/08 | Music, Interviews Alyce Metallo shares her story, her music
and the responsibility she feels to share her faith at all times,
sometimes using words, and whether it's for President Clinton or
performing in front of wounded American soldiers at Vice President
Cheney's dinner.
Homespun Hope
Jacob Sahms | 03/08/08 | Music Overall, the album is different, eclectic
even, and serves up something a little different than what the
mainstream musical world is pushing. It's full of musings and
reflections, loss and hope. Actually, hope probably takes certain
stage, and the world would be better for that, wouldn't it?
They're BAAAAAAACK!
Jacob Sahms | 03/06/08 | Music, Interviews P.O.D. rises, reunited and refreshed, with
When Angels & Serpents Dance, to rock your stereo. In a world that
talks about peace all the time, but is rarely practiced, P.O.D.
genuinely pursues it, and genuinely rocks.
Hymns Re-mixed
Jacob Sahms | 03/04/08 | Music Jadon Lavik's Roots Run Deep album is
simple, but simply put, it's excellent, guitar-driven worship. Taking
standard, well-known hymns, Lavik fills forty-plus minutes with
well-done worship in his third album.
Beautiful Boy
J. Alan Sharrer | 03/04/08 | Books, Previews David Sheff's son Nic is an honor student,
good athlete, and role model who begins taking meth (methamphetamines),
triggering a nightmare few parents would want to dream about, much less
live out in real life.
Blasphemy
Jacob Sahms | 03/03/08 | Books, Previews Since the beginning of time, humans have
been communicating with and receiving messages from the divine, and
it's often laughable to believe that we are somehow so much more
sophisticated than those earlier ancestors were.
The New Christians
Aaron Lee | 03/03/08 | Books The Emerging Church movement finds
spirituality in all of culture, finding hope in the redemptive,
humanizing side of Ryan Seacrest in American Idol while balancing out
the chastising voices of Randy, Paula, and Simon. Angel: After the Fall Issue #1
Jesse Johnson | 03/05/08 | Comix Whedon was infamous for taking his
characters down the road less traveled and sending his heroes into
seemingly impossible situation. Once again, we find our hero in a
staggeringly difficult scenario, taking on the full volley of hell's
worst to save those he can. My Name is Earl
Maurice Broaddus | 03/07/08 | TV
In the silence, God is there. Or in Earl's
words, "I thought Karma was dead, but she was just laying low." You can
turn your back on Him, but He won't turn His back on you. And sometimes
we need the silence in order to learn-if only to learn to listen.
The Big Give
Yo | 03/05/08 | TV The Big Give, the new reality show from
Oprah, was a big hit. I feel the whole set up is a big phony. Is this
really generosity and compassion? While it may be nice to have
something "heartwarming" and "positive" on TV, let's not confuse
reality TV with reality.Terminator: The Sarah Connors Chronicles
Maurice Broaddus | 03/04/08 | TV Hers was the voice that shaped him, taught
him, disciplined him, and helped him come to terms with his messianic
consciousness. It's not easy to raise a teenage boy these days, and
Sarah is one mother you don't want to cross.
