Hey Shanghai!

How U doin'? Another day, another dollar--and every five days is a weekend to spend all these dollars! Innit?

Well, last weekend saw two big openings with Racks and The Wall both settin' up shop in Shanghers. Weren't there? You didn't go to either of them? What were you doing? Well, don't worry. We've got you covered with the party pictures. Scroll down for those or stroll into either yourself this weekend to check 'em out!

Well, well. What do we have here tonight then? Hmm. It seems the good, kind folks down at The Shelter are celebrating their three-month charity drive (raising 18,000rmb no less!) with a big party featuring most of the independent DJs in town! Very nice. But who's going to be spinning at LOgO if they're all at the Shelter? Riddle me that!

6,000rmb of that charity money is being reserved for local music projects, so local musicians, hit up club manager Gaz this weekend with your sales pitch and get your hands on some of that green! (Or red, if he pays you in hundreds.)

Lots of high-end events tonight at your favourite high-end clubs and bars: Ministry of Sound again at Attica with that old warhorse Dave Vega, a ritzy fashion show avec afterparty at Vue in the Hyatt on the Bund. Park (California Club actually) returns with DJ Samir from France who rocked the decks last time he was there and is back by "popular demand." And while you're there you might as well check out Lux with their Club Air party -- if you like RnB that is. ILS gets shagadellic and Zapata's pops off again with another popcorn party. Simple pleasures for simple folk!

Saturday is even bigger and badder with the much-anticipated performance of Trance sensation Infected Musroom at the new, old Tangui VIProom in the Jing 'An district. Do you like your music spacey, futuristic, melodic, hypnotic, catatonic, reverbed, delayed, flanged, and phased? Head on down and check that out. Tickets are a bargain (80rmb at the door) and that one is set to GO OFF.

More madness at MAO this Saturday as they pay tribute to women's day by enabling the women to get drunk cheaper! Male strippers, "win a bartender" prizes, and other wackiness in the name of universal feminism! That's progress. They tell us that MAO these days is really jumping with the party not stopping until they turn the lights on at 5am, so there's an option if you just don't know when to quit. Also, ladies, Shanghai clubs are showing you much love these days with Dragon and Mural unveiling new ladies nights concepts during the week so be sure to check those out.

Want more? Live music is back at Yuyintang, S.T.D. returns with Digital Love and The Shelter goes back to their roots!

Other stuff happening? The literary festival returns this weekend at the Glamour Bar for all the smart people (and the pretend smart people), with appearances by a bunch of uber, semi, and non-famous writers, journalists, academics, poets, social gadflies, well-wishers, hangers-on, and so on: Christopher Koch, Fatima Bhutto, and Arundhati Roy. Tickets start at around 65rmb and climb upwards (but don't climb all that high). Check out Slam poet Richard Smith (as Elvis McGonagall) performing at 9pm on Friday and Saturday. (SmSh interview here)

And don't forget! Celine Dion is on the way next month!

Play safe! Play nice!

Reeeeespect,

Da Admiral

Joke of the week

A grade school teacher was asking students what their parents did for a living. "Tim, you're first," she said. "What does your mother do all day?"

Tim stood up and proudly said, "She's a doctor."

"That's wonderful. How about you, Amie?" Amie shyly stood up, scuffed her feet and said, "My father is a mailman."

"Thank you, Amie," said the teacher. "What about your father, Billy?"

Billy proudly stood up and announced, "My daddy is a pimp."

The teacher was aghast and promptly changed the subject to geography. Later that day she went to Billy's house and rang the bell. Billy'¡¯s father answered the door. The teacher explained what his son had said and demanded an explanation.

Billy's father said, "I'm actually an attorney, but how can I explain a thing like that to a seven-year-old?"
