Does Opinion Trump Fact in Design Decisions?
Buried in the comments to a Design Observer post about a graphic design exhibition appearing around Europe and the U.S. a single line in a comment by Manual seemed to jump out at me:
Is 'opinion' more important than fact or proof?
Despite what studies and years of practice have revealed about how people read and comprehend or relate to varous typographical elements including font choices and punctuation, images, colors, and layouts someone is going to break the rules.

Double Duty Designers Cost Less
In response to my article on adding Web design to your desktop publishing resume, Kathleen writes (emphasis mine):
I am a print designer but have done web design as well. I can tell you from the job boards that I've seen over the past couple of years, that companies are wanting BOTH print and web-it's certainly cheaper to pay one person instead of two. And, from a branding/marketing standpoint, it makes it easier to keep the continuity amongst all the pieces of a company's identity.

Is it really cheaper to pay one person instead of two?

 

Prudent Use of Desktop Publishing Software
Digital Revolutions writes about the ethics involved in the use of today's powerful software and hardware:
...the powers bestowed upon us by modern software warrant prudence in use.
Even if we don't intend to deceive we should be diligent in how we manipulate photos, text, and layouts. Harm can come from innocent but ill-conceived use of desktop publishing software.

There are some scenarios that might not be as blatant, unethical, or illegal as altering a news photo or creating counterfeit money but still potentially harmful. An example that comes to mind...
