Howard Chapman, Editor, writes:
Today sees the start of the first Apprenticeship Week, now set to
become an annual event following the recommendations of the
Apprenticeship Review 'Expanding apprenticeships, developing
world-class skills' published at the end of last month. We have a
special report for Buildingtalk from Eric Turner of Proskills who
reviews the new production apprenticeship programme for Building
Products. We all recognise that it is vital that there are
improvements in training if we are to meet the skill challenges of the
next decade.
We also give a platform for the 2008 National Training Awards who are
looking for stories of how training has transformed businesses in the
construction sector. You can take our link to find out more and then
go online to see an information webcast.
On the civil engineering front, CMS have launched Secugrid, a new
generation of geogrid that can be used to value engineer any existing
soil reinforcement specification. Hydramotion have a new hand-held
moisture meter that will speed up road building by enabling moisture content
of materials to be measured on site instead of taking samples to a
laboratory.
On the solar energy front, Redland have an easy to install solar
water heater that sits within the roofscape and can provide up to 70%
of the average three-bedroom household's hot water needs. Brett
Martin Daylight Systems launch a range of enhancements to rooflights
which will significantly reduce the carbon footprint of wide-span
buildings such as distribution centres and warehouses.
With the price of many scrap metals rising sharply, it is encouraging
a sharp increase in theft, including the metal plaques stolen from
graves last week. Manhole covers from highways and pedestrian walkways
are another easy target and Clark-Drain wrote to remind us that
thieves can be deterred if the right manhole cover is installed.
Finally, congratulations to EC Harris, a leading international
consultancy, appointed to provide budgetary, risk and programme
management services for the construction of the new GBP4.2bn Forth
Replacement Crossing, set to be the largest transport project in
Scotland. This will be a multi-modal cable-stayed bridge similar to
the Pont Normandie, one of my favourite bridges, which spans the river
Seine, linking Le Havre to Honfleur in Normandy. Incidentally, tolls
on the Forth and Tay road bridges have just been scrapped less than
two years after spending GBP4 million on the bridge's new toll booths.
A rather too familiar story of government planning. You can check out
more details on the bridges and perhaps leave a comment if you wish
via the Buildingtalk blog - http://www.buildingtalk.com/blog
Best wishes

(Proskills, 25 Feb 2008)
Eric Turner of Proskills reviews the new production apprenticeship
programme for Building Products announced during Apprenticeship Week.
The new production apprenticeship programme pulls in the important job
roles of operators and technical occupations. In the past, employers
may have agonised over the contentious question: apprentices - who
needs them?. But this new apprenticeship has been developed at just
the right time to counteract the ageing workforce within Building
Products.

thefts can be deterred if the right manhole cover is installed. Full
