In the forum 'msbetty54' asks about the Brenner books on pricing and alternatives. The Graphic Artists Guild was suggested as one pricing resource for creative professionals. Any others come to mind? Anyone have some comments -- good or bad -- about the Brenner books?

Doing Before and After Makeovers
A discussion that started back in 2000 caught my eye this week. Members talked about the pros and cons of doing makeovers of fliers, brochures, menus, business cards, or other items they encounter and approaching the business with their before and after versions. Some folks like the idea. Others don't. It's not something I do 'for real' but this week I encountered a dozen or so restaurant menus, sales fliers, and a catalog that seemed to just BEG for a makeover. I found myself redoing these pieces in my head -- even doodling ideas on a napkin.

Is this still a viable way to drum up business? Tell us about your successes or failures and best practices doing unsolicited makeovers.

 
Starting With a Blank Page
The initial document setup can be a daunting task -- long before you ever get to the fun stuff like choosing fonts and colors. For a basic booklet setup, 'phoenix' describes one approach to setting up facing pages, margins, bleeds, and such. What's your own method of starting the layout process once you have the software open and you're staring at the blank screen? If you're instructing someone new, what minimum information would they need to begin the initial document setup?
