Wishing you a happy and prosperous Year of the Rat!
Dear Criss Kally,

The Lunar Year of the Pig in 2007 was a momentous year for Alibaba.com with our successful IPO in Hong Kong. As we welcome in the Year of the Rat I want to thank you, our members, for your ongoing support and loyalty.

The Year of the Rat will bring new challenges for businesses around the world, as we face problems such as the credit crunch and a possible US recession. In these uncertain times, we understand it's more important than ever for you to source more efficiently and look for opportunities to expand into new markets.
To overcome these challenges, we're excited to introduce some of our new initiatives for the coming year:

Export to China, Export to the World
With a 20% increase in import volume from 2006 to 2007, China is rising as a major market for international goods but many businesses in the U.S. and Europe have faced obstacles when trying to break into the Mainland market. That's why in 2008, Alibaba.com will launch a new, easy-to-use service to help our international members sell their products into China. Alibaba's China marketplace is the dominant player of domestic business-to-business trade in China, reaching half of the 42 million SMEs in China. We already have a huge pool of Chinese members that are potential importers of your products!

Local Solution for Europe
Over 15% of our international members are from Europe. Given the linguistic and cultural diversity of the region, we will add more customer service staff to our European office and develop local e-commerce solutions in order to better serve our international customers.

Alibaba.com Japan
In December 2007, we launched a new version of our Japanese language website. This year we will put more resources on the ground in Japan to provide an even more effective global trading solution so non-Japanese speaking suppliers can also explore opportunities with one of the world's biggest export markets.

Open Sesame, India
Like China, India has a robust and growing export trade, driven largely by SMEs, and will be a priority market for Alibaba.com in 2008. We've already held our first Open Sesame event in Mumbai, and our Indian members can expect to see at lot more of us this year.

Trust and Quality
We recognize that trust and quality is the number one priority for most of our members. Accordingly, we are working on a number of projects to improve the safety of our marketplace so you can trade with more confidence. This year we plan to implement new world-class anti-fraud technology and roll out anti-counterfeit tools, enhanced vendor verification programs and dispute resolution measures.
What implications does the Year of the Rat have for your business in 2008? I would love to hear from you so please send me your stories, comments or suggestions to david@service.alibaba.com, and we at Alibaba.com will do our best to address your problems. I received thousands of messages last year and while I couldn't reply to all of them I did read every one. Your feedback has helped me understand your needs and how to better improve our services.

On behalf of everyone at Alibaba.com, I would like to wish you a happy and prosperous Year of the Rat!
