Us too. BUT. It turns out that the Farm Bill is the funding vehicle for the Community Food Projects program, the country's major source of funding for community food security projects. And funding for the CFP is in danger of being axed from the final version of this year's farm bill. Though we rarely ask readers to get involved in specific political scuffles, we are devoting this issue of our newsletter to convincing you to do one thing: make three short but important phone calls. Read our article on the CFP and you'll see why this is a program well worth saving. If you need a minute and a little boost of energy before you make those calls, grab an orange and read our nutrition and recipe columns. You'll see below just how far beyond vitamin C those beauties go! As always, thanks for your interest in LocalHarvest.org and your support of family farmers. See you next month, and until then, take good care and eat well! | |

The CFP: Supporting Elegant Resolutions to Complex Problems
In eastern Tennessee, farmers are moving out
of tobacco production and into fruits and
vegetables. Thanks to the Jubillee Project's
Clinch Powell Community Kitchen, they are
able to extend their profitability by turning
some of the produce into preserves, sauces,
pickles and relishes. In New York, hundreds
of teenaged girls are helping to run "Juice
Joints" through Lower East Side Girls Club,
and are learning about local food, good
nutrition, and business skills. On the Tohono
O'odham reservation in Arizona, tribal
members are growing and eating traditional
foods again, and watching their diabetes rate
fall.

Nancy's Nutrition Corner - "Ordinary Oranges"
More than just an excellent source of vitamin
C, recent research has revealed the health
benefits of oranges are actually due to a
myriad of phytochemical compounds. An orange
has over 170 different nutrients, many of
which have been shown to have antioxidant,
anti-carcinogenic, and anti-inflammatory
effects. The phytochemicals most currently in
the spotlight include citrus flavanones,
polyphenols, and limonoids.

Recipe Corner: Oranges - By Lorna Sass
Lately I've been enjoying a love affair with
orange zest - in the kitchen, that is.
I recently added a bit to my chocolate chip
cookie dough to give the cookies a fruity
perfume. I scraped some into a stew of
chicken with prunes and olives to bring up
the flavors. And I stirred a heaping teaspoon
into a yogurt-muesli breakfast to bring
vitality to an otherwise sleepy concoction.

If you're like us, every time the Farm Bill
is mentioned, an uncontrollable urge to drift
away from the conversation overtakes you. You
start wondering what's for supper, or whether
the car needs an oil change. You'd just as
soon leave the whole complex affair to the
people who are paid to make sure it all works
out.
