SINGLE TOPIC ISSUES POLL
We love reader input. So we'd like your opinion on whether or not single
topic issues would appeal to you. For example, we might do an entire
issue with articles related to diabetes, or an issue full of articles on
crafts for kids, or staying in touch with children long distance (for
grandparents, relatives, or parents away due to work), how to find a new
home, etc; the sky's the limit. Send an email to us at
make-a-note@att.net and tell us if you do or don't like the single topic
idea. If you are in favor of the idea, let us know what topics you might
like to see us cover in coming months. Please note, the single topic
issues would only be an occasional thing. POST IT...near your email.

SEE THE SATELLITE BEFORE IT'S GONE
You may have seen recent news articles about the US satellite, the size of
a bus, that is in a decaying orbit. The US is now saying they plan to
shoot it down on Thursday, so that it doesn't come down in a populated
area. But it is visible with the naked eye (although binoculars or a
telescope would help), if you know where to look. It will look like one
of the brightest objects in the sky and will appear to be moving like an
airp***. To find out where and when to look in your area, go to...
www.heavens-above.com And to read more about the satellite, go to...

This is an especially fun activity for kids. POST IT...on the fridge.

GETTING MORE SHRIMP
If you're like me, you love shrimp, but wish it was a little less
expensive. So if you're looking to get a little extra out of your peeled
shrimp servings, try this little tip. Gently grip the shell closest to
the meat showing in one hand, and with the other hand gently grip the meat
itself closest to the shell. Twist the meat and pull out of the shell and
you will end up with another little bite of shrimp that would otherwise be
left in the shell. On most shrimp, that means about 25% more. Works for
recipes or when you are eating out. POST IT...in your recipe box with
shrimp recipes. Also be sure to check out our recommended back issue
below for a great shrimp recipe to try the technique out on.

24 HOUR GYMS
First, I'm not speaking of any particular chain here, these safety tips
are designed for anyone using gyms that are open 24 hours. I'm all for
any program that makes it easier for people to get healthier, and
obviously a gym that is open 24 hours can be a great benefit for people
working odd hours, or who can only work out at odd times. But do be
careful. Find out if the gym has a representative on site at all times,
and if the person has undergone a background check. Find out what kind of
security measures are taken for the gym and also for the parking lot. If
the gym does not have a representative on hand, they will usually use some
kind of keycard or code to allow people in and out. If this is the case,
find out if customers go through some kind of screening process, what they
do about stolen info/cards, if they have security cameras or panic
buttons, and how dropped members are eliminated from the system. The
number one biggest safety rule, either with or without a representative on
location is to work out with a buddy. Many gyms offer special discounts
to pairs who join up. Carry pepper spray in your workout clothes. Ask
the representative, if one is available, to watch you walk to your
vehicle. If you think this is being too careful, think about gyms you've
been in before...would you want to be alone with every single person
you've encountered in a gym? And women (or men for that matter), don't
ever take risks just because you carry pepper spray, have a black belt,
are in good shape, it's daytime, or whatever. It is better to avoid
danger, than to try to deal with it. POST IT...under "gyms" in the yellow
pages.

RECIPE: WRANGLER CRESCENT BAKE
Preheat oven to 375F. Brown 1 1/2 lbs ground beef in skillet, drain off
fat, then rinse with hot water to remove even more fat. Stir in 16 oz can
of baked beans, 1/3C barbecue sauce, 1 tblsp mustard, and 1/4 tsp garlic
powder. Heat through, stirring frequently. Once heated through, turn
heat down to low and add 1C chopped onions, and allow to simmer. Then
take an 8oz can of crescent rolls (reduced fat works fine), unroll dough
into 2 long rectangles and place in ungreased 9x13 pan. Press over bottom
and about 1/2" up sides to form crust. Spoon meat mixture on top of crust
and bake for 20 min. Remove from oven and sprinkle with 1C of shredded
cheese, 2% works fine, and bake for 5-10 min longer, or until cheese is
melted and crust is golden brown. Serve & enjoy. For a little extra
touch, sprinkle a can of sliced olives on top of the cheese before
melting. POST IT...in your recipe box and on your shopping list. This is
a great stick to your ribs meal.
