STEVEN IVORY: Sami McKinney Was Here=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
=20=20=20=20=20
*Sami McKinney was warm, funny and had some of the best gossip in=20
Hollywood. Lord knows he could also be catty and stubborn, but time=20
with Sami was usually spent in smiles and laughter.=20

I don't even remember how I met Sami. Probably back in the '90s,=20
most likely through our mutual friend, Klymaxx producer and songwriter=20
Bernadette Cooper. I'd run into him at the dry cleaners, or at=20
Farmer's Market on third and Fairfax. An only child who loved to cook=20
almost as much as he loved Bernice, his mother, Sami would peruse the=20
Market's fresh vegetables stand or haggle with a merchant for the best=20
cut of chicken or fish while we talked.=20=20

Our conversations were usually about the thing that connected us=20
most: music. In addition to knowing his way around a kitchen, by=20
profession Sami was a songwriter and producer. He co-wrote and/or=20
produced songs for, among others, Patti Labelle, Santana, Lalah=20
Hathaway, Anita Baker and Chaka Khan. While Baker's "(I Love You) Just=20
Because" might be his best known copyright, my favorite McKinney tune is=
=20
Baker's rendition of "It's Been You."=20=20

Sami and I both shared the unvarnished opinion that, aside from a=
=20
few desperate exceptions, black pop is going to hell in a hand basket.=20=
=20
Our camaraderie was sealed the day we discovered we both harbored sheer=20
bewilderment at the success and accolades bestowed a certain black=20
female singer considered one of the most important of her generation.=20=
=20

"They [the singer's fans] ask me, 'Don't you feel her pain?'" Sami=20
loved to say. "And I say, 'Yes, I DO feel pain--she's flat, off key and=20
it pains my ears.'" We discussed new artists and current music, deciding=
=20
what was hot, while wondering how other newly released recordings ever=20
saw the light of day.=20

Despite our pessimism, Sami was optimistic about pop music's=20
future. "Real music," he'd declare, in reference to the skilled,=20
impassioned musical and vocal craftsmanship that defines true R&B, "is=20
going to make a comeback. Today's music just has to hit rock bottom to=20
the point that people will say no to all the non singing, no-songwriting=
=20
posers. The public will say, 'Enough!' And baby, when they do, I'll be=20
there."=20

Sami's words echoed through my mind as I sat in L.A.'s Trinity=20
Baptist Church last Saturday afternoon. It all seemed so surreal. One=20
week Sami was here, and the next week I'm leafing through his funeral=20
program. Gone at the age of fifty.=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20

You can't know this until you get there, but fifty is when you're=20
shifting your life into second gear. It is a wonderful place in=20
adulthood, when you begin to know just what you want to do with the rest=
=20
of your life. And to be sure, the stories shared by those who knew him=20
characterized Sami's zest for living. Singer Freda Payne told the=20
congregation that it was only at the service--while reading the date of=20
birth in his obituary just before taking the podium--that she realized=20
Sami was but a teenager in the '70s when he'd come hear her sing at the=20
very adult Playboy Club in Los Angeles.=20=20=20

Patti LaBelle, during an audio tape played to the audience, told=20
how she first met Sami years ago: Backstage before a show in Los=20
Angeles, her hair just wouldn't act right. Desperate, she sent someone=20
onstage to ask the crowd if there was a hairdresser in the house--did I=20
mention Sami was also a hair stylist? Sami promptly stood up and was=20
quickly ushered backstage. Consequently, a do' was done and a lifelong=20
friendship born.=20

Of course, it figures that Sami's homegoing, attended by talented,=20
teary-eyed singers and musicians, would feature some soul-stirring=20=20
singing. Vocalists Terry Dexter, Randy Phillips, Merry Clayton and The=20
Perri Sisters tugged at heart strings while taking the roof off the=20
place with great performances, some of them improvised. It was=20
enthralling to witness singers, on impulse, simply get up, take the mic=20
and have the rhythm section, including a purring, emotion-snatching B-3=20
organ, fall in and create an entertaining performance.=20=20

However, as much as the music warmed my heart, it also saddened me,=
=20
for I was reminded that everything going on in the pulpit that day in=20
honor of Sami--the wonderful singing and intuitive musicianship--is=20
slowly seeping out of the body of contemporary black music.=20

For example, the other morning I caught a young man on TV being=20
heralded as so-called Neo Soul's latest light. To a prerecorded music=20
track, he and two background singers performed a musical idea that could=
=20
have been a song if someone had taken the time to develop a musical=20
bridge for it. Also on stage was an artist--a real one, complete with=20
easel--who, as the young man sang, sketched a drawing to the music.=20=20
Novel idea. Having a real musician up there would have been cool, too.=20

They want me to believe Amy Winehouse is a soul singer, and I say=20
no, no, no.=20=20

Samuel, my man, I understand that I have to come to grips on my own=
=20
with your sudden passing. But in the meantime, if you could send down a=20
few original melodies and some uplifting lyrics, we'd certainly=20
appreciate it.=20=20

THE BRIDGE: Black History-Cops And The People
-- by Darryl James

*America is a funny land.

Not funny as in "ha ha," but funny as in strange.

So strange that even though cops have historically been at odds with=20
Blacks, people try to pretend that there is something else going on in a=
=20
so-called justice system that sometimes seems like it persecutes just=20
us.

But anyone who has lived in a poor neighborhood with their eyes and=20
mind open realizes that the "Thin Blue Line," is typically erected=20
between the "haves" and the "have nots," frequently doling out abuse to=20
the "have nots."

And, the "have nots" don't always get their day in court when there is=20
abuse, which is why periodically, the people speak in the loudest voice=20
possible - riots.

Perhaps no city has the reputation for rioting that Los Angeles has=20
earned. And some of its policies with regard to policing ostensibly add=20
fuel to the fire.

Recently, the Los Angeles Police Commission made a radical change in=20
policy, now withholding the names of officers involved in shootings, as=20
well as incidents in which cops use fists, flashlights, batons or other=20
objects to subdue suspects.

What this portends is a severe threat to police accountability in an=20
environment where police are a severe threat to citizens who pay cop=20
salaries through taxes. This is of great concern because of the enduring=
=20
friction between officers of the law and people of color.=20=20

According to Rev. Cecil "Chip" Murray, "when you have the 'haves' and=20
the 'have-nots,' the police powers are meant to keep the haves having=20
and that forces the have-nots to have-not."

Henry "Kee Kee" Watson, one of a group now known as The LA Four in the=20
beating of Reginald Denny, said that people might act shocked, but "it's=
=20
no secret that Black people have no love for police. People try to act=20
like it's a secret that police have no love for poor people, especially=20
poor Blacks.=20

"People also tried to say that King's beating was an isolated=20
incident," Watson added. "The only thing isolated was that it was=20
caught on tape. But we know that in South Central, that's business as=20
usual."

And it is business as usual, from Amadou D'iallo in New York City to=20
Timothy Thomas in Cincinnati, Ohio and countless Black men and women in=20
between, as well as throughout American history.

TURNER'S TWO CENTS: From "Gangster" to "Raisin"

*The most compelling and important moment in the brilliant film=20
"American Gangster" is the shot of a baby crying next to the corpse of=20
its heroin-addicted mother.=20=20

This agonizing image punctuates a montage contrasting the=20
luxurious lifestyle of drug lord Frank Lucas (Denzel Washington) with=20
the hell lived by his customers.=20=20

It's a crucial sequence that provides the moral context needed to=
=20
understand the story. That screaming baby forces us to face the fact=20
that Frank Lucas -- despite his charm, business acumen and love of=20
family -- is an evil man who profits from the death and misery of others=
=20
- including children - and must, therefore, fall.=20=20

This point bears repeating since "American Gangster" is coming home on=20
DVD this week (Tuesday, February 19). Universal Studios Home=20
Entertainment is releasing "American Gangster" in special two-disc and=20
three-disc DVD collector's editions.=20=20

"American Gangster" is a tremendous movie and it deserves all of=20
the critical acclaim it has received, including the best supporting=20
actress Oscar nomination for Ruby Dee, who is stellar (as always!) as=20
Frank Lucas' mother. Miss Ruby's performance has already been honored=20
with the Screen Actor's Guild Award and her legacy honored by a NAACP=20
image award. An Academy Award would be a well-earned honor in an=20
esteemed career that flourishes after more than 60 years. The Oscars=20
air live on ABC Sunday, February 24.=20
=20
The night after the Academy Awards, ABC will telecast the new film=
=20
version of the landmark play which Ruby Dee helped originate on Broadway=
=20
and on the silver screen almost 50 years ago. "A Raisin in the Sun,"=20
Lorraine Hansberry's timeless American play about working class black=20
folks striving for a better life in 1950s Chicago, comes to television=20
on Monday, February 25 as an expanded movie directed by Kenny Leon=20
(artistic director for the Alliance Theatre Company in Atlanta) with=20
new scenes scripted by Paris Qualles ("The Rosa Parks Story," "Tuskegee=20
Airmen"). NBC's "Raisin" reunites the cast of the Tony Award-winning=20
2004 Broadway revival, giving the masses a unique opportunity to=20
experience the brilliance that earned Tony Awards for Phylicia Rashad=20
and Audra McDonald and a Tony nomination for Sanaa Lathan. The weak=20
link in the cast is, of course, Sean Combs. His amateurish performance=20
in this TV production justifies the generally bad reviews he received=20
four years ago on Broadway. Diddy has no business onstage with these=20
great actors. Everyone in the cast, including the little boy who plays=20
his son, acts circles around him.=20

THE JOURNAL OF STEFFANIE RIVERS: A Political Quagmire
=20
*Have you ever spoken in support of an issue only because it was=20
politically correct to do so and you didn't have to back up your words=20
with actions? It's a situation most white men probably are faced with in=
=20
2008.

In mixed company a majority of them would claim to support the most=
=20
qualified presidential candidate regardless of race or gender, because=20
for the past two hundred years their declarations have not been put to=20
the test.=20

Although there have been people of color to run for president, only=
=20
white men have been in the position to be voted as president of the=20
United States - until now.

In all fairness, simple psychology revealed that most people (of=20
any race or gender) will choose a person who most resembles them -=20
regardless of the situation - because that's who they can most identify=20
with. But when nobody is looking over their shoulders in the voting=20
booth, are white men willing to vote for the best candidate, even if=20
it's a woman or a non-white man? Will they put their votes where their=20
mouths are and actually give a Black man or a woman their support, or=20
will they cross party lines or abstain from the process to keep their=20
(real or perceived) political power in the hands of those who look like=20
them?

If this political season does nothing else it will cause some=20
people who claim to be down for the cause to weigh what they say against=
=20
what they do when nobody is watching.

Lest you conclude that I'm just venting against people of the=20
Caucasian persuasion, ponder this: If people of color expect white men=20
to act for the greater good when casting their vote, they should do the=20
same.

So long as nobody Black (qualified or unqualified) was a viable=20
candidate some of you were vocal FOC's (Friends of the Clintons). Now=20
that Sen. Barack Obama is the presidential flavor of the month some=20
people have thrown the Clintons overboard.

I'm still undecided on who I will support. And of course it's your=20
choice to support whomever you want. But don't vote for Obama simply=20
because he is Black or for Clinton just because she is a woman. Take=20
time to evaluate the issues and every candidate's proposed solutions.=20
That way in the day after Election Day you can look yourself in the=20
mirror and know you made the best decision for the right reasons.

OBAMA UPDATE: Undercounted in NY; Secret meeting with Edwards; Bill=20
Clinton in confrontation with Obama backer

*Reports out of New York City say Illinois Senator Barack Obama's=20
primary night results were greatly undercounted in several areas ... in=20
some cases leaving him with zero votes when, in fact, he had pulled in=20
hundreds, said the Board of Elections.=20

Unofficial primary results gave Obama no votes in nearly 80=20
districts, including Harlem's 94th and other historically black areas -=20
but many of those initial tallies proved to be wildly off the mark, the=20
board said.=20

Because of recounts, in some districts, Obama may end up in a tie=20
or even defeating Hillary Clinton, the Democratic senator from New York.=
=20

"Outrageous" is what Brooklyn City Councilman Charles Barron=20
called the understated figures=20

"I think this is an all-out effort to stop a campaign that is=20
about to make history and render America's first black president," he=20
said. "We need some kind of independent or federal agency to investigate=
=20
this."

In other Obama news, the Democratic presidential candidate met in=20
secret with John Edwards on Sunday. The meeting was confirmed by his=20
campaign managers, but wouldn't say if won an endorsement.=20

Edwards dropped out of the presidential race after failing to win=20
any of the earlier state races. Both Obama & Clinton are actively=20
seeking his support because of his appeal to working-class Democrats who=
=20
are heavily represented in Ohio's primary and Pennsylvania's April 22=20
contest.

Finally, it appears that Obama's winning ways are causing Bill=20
Clinton to come apart at the seams. He's starting to lose his cool - in=20
public - more and more. The latest case was in Canton, Ohio when the=20
former US President got in the face of Robert Holeman an Obama=20
supporter.

"I think he even hit me in the face with his hand," Holeman said.=20
"He did give me a little pop. It was okay, because I understand his=20
tenacity for his wife."=20

Some staffers from the Clinton camp expressed to reporters that=20
Holeman was an Obama plant, however that was categorically denied by the=
=20
Obama spokesperson Ben LaBolt. Also, a spokesperson for President=20
Clinton who was near the confrontation, said there was no physical=20
contact.

For MORE on the incident and how an increasingly agitated Bill=20
Clinton negatively affects Hillary Clinton's campaign, watch this MSNBC=20
clip:

TIME LISTS '25 MOST IMPORTANT FILMS ON RACE': Works span nearly 100=20
years; shows transformation through eras.

*Time Magazine, in partnership with CNN, has marked Black History Month=
=20
with the selection of 25 movies it believes honors the artistry, appeal=20
and determination of African Americans on and behind the big screen.

"The 25 Most Important Films on Race," spanning nine decades, includes=
=20
such works as "Hallelujah!" (1929), "Imitation of Life" (1934), "Gone=20
With the Wind" (1939), "Carmen Jones" (1954), "Killer of Sheep"
(1977), "Boyz N the Hood" (1991) and Will Smith's latest film "I Am=20
Legend."

The list "reveals a legacy that was tragic before it was=20
triumphant,"
writes Time magazine's Richard Corliss. "At first, blacks were=20
invisible; when they were allowed to be seen, it was mostly as derisive=20
comic relief.
The 1950s ushered in the age of the noble Negro, in the imposing person=20
of Sidney Poitier - the Jackie Robinson of movies.=20

"Only when Hollywood realized that a sizable black audience would=
=20
pay to see films more reflective of their lives, whether funny, poignant=
=20
or violent, were they given control of the means of production.=20
Sometimes. The fact remains that of the 25 films here, chosen to cover=20
the widest range of black films, fewer than half were directed by=20
blacks."
=20
The 25 films are listed below:

Hallelujah! (1929)
Judge Priest (1934)
Imitation of Life (1934)
God's Step Children (1938)
The Duke Is Tops (1938)
Gone With the Wind (1939)
The Blood of Jesus (1941)
The Jackie Robinson Story (1950)
Native Son (1951)
Carmen Jones (1954)
The Defiant Ones (1958)
In the Heat of the Night (1967)
Sweet Sweetback's Baad Asssss Song (1971) Lady Sings the Blues (1972)=20
Cooley High (1975) Killer of Sheep (1977) Richard Pryor Live in Concert=20
(1979) A Soldier's Story (1984) Do the Right Thing (1989) Boyz N the=20
Hood (1991) Eve's Bayou (1997) Bamboozled (2000) Madea's Family Reunion=20
(2002) I Am Legend (2007)

VH1'S TAILOR MADE GIVES COP MIDDLE FINGER: New York's fianc=E9 tagged for=
=20
disorderly conduct.

*George "Tailor Made" Weisgerber, the winner of VH1's "I Love New=
=20
York 2," received a disorderly-conduct summons for raising his middle=20
finger to a police officer in Chelsea.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
The New York Daily News reports that Weisgerber, a fashion=20
planner out of Queens, allegedly cussed out the cop in addition to=20
flipping him the bird outside a nightclub.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
A friend of Weisgerber's said the reality show vet was in front=20
of Taj on W. 21st St. when he got caught in a dust-up involving=20
clubgoers outside of Duvet.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
Weisgerber acknowledges "raising his finger in the air," but=20
believes the summons had more to do with jaywalking, says his buddy.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
Meanwhile, Tailor Made and New York have yet to announce a=20
wedding date.

J.LO'S DELIVERY ROOM ON STANDBY: No one allowed in private space=20
reserved at Long Island hospital.=20

*When Jennifer Lopez finally goes into labor to push out those=20
twins, her delivery room at North Shore University Hospital on Long=20
Island will be good and ready for the drama. After all, it's been on=20
standby for the past two weeks.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=09
"No one's even allowed in there until she gets here. It's just=20
sitting there for her," a staffer told the New York Post's Page Six.=20=20
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
According to the column, J.Lo's people reserved the private,=20
furnished room two weeks ago in anticipation of the twins' arrival.=20

The room reportedly contains a brown leather couch, among other=20
furnishings. Word has it that the hospital has also beefed up security.

SLATE.COM HAS FUN WITH OBAMA'S NAME: Plus, were Senator's New York=20
primary results underrecorded?

*Barack Obama's name has become somewhat of a creative outlet for the=20
team at Slate.com, a Web site said to be experiencing "Obasms" over the=20
Democratic presidential candidate.=20

According to the New York Post, the Internet space has launched the=20
Obamaficator - or Obama word generator that "Obamifies" words and gives=20
definitions.

Here's a sample: Obamatose: in a deep slumber, dreaming of Obama.
Baracktail: a mixture with the main ingredient being Obama. Barackwurst:=
=20
a short, thick, highly seasoned Obama. Barackcupied: fixed on Obama.
Obambination: a union of warring parties brought together by Obama.

Meanwhile, the Post is also reporting that Obama's New York Primary=20
results were underrecorded in several districts, in some cases leaving=20
him with zero votes when, in fact, he had pulled in hundreds, the Board=20
of Elections said Sunday.

Unofficial primary results gave Obama no votes in nearly 80=20
districts, including Harlem's 94th and other historically black areas -=20
but many of those initial numbers turned out to be flat out wrong, the=20
board said. In some districts getting a recount, the senator from=20
Illinois is even closer to defeating Hillary Clinton.=20
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
Initial results in the 94th, for example, showed a 141-0 sweep=20
for Hillary Clinton, but the recount changed the tally to 261-136.=20
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
As yet, none of the results have been certified, but a=20
ballot-by-ballot canvassing of all voting machines has begun, a board=20
spokesperson said. Human error was blamed for many of the mistakes.=20

IS NAOMI CAMPBELL ENGAGED? Word has it she's about to marry her=20
Brazilian boyfriend after a two-week courtship.

*Britain's News of the World is reporting that supermodel Naomi=20
Campbell is about to jump the broom.
=20=20=20=20=20=20=20
According to the newspaper, the 37-year-old catwalk star is newly=20
engaged to Brazilian businessman Marcus Elias, whom she reportedly met=20
two weeks ago at a Vogue party in Sao Paolo.=20

"They were all over each other and looked perfectly suited," said=
=20
one source. "Now Naomi's wearing a sparkling diamond ring and everyone=20
is wondering if they've had a whirlwind engagement."

Marcus, 49, apparently showed up at the Vogue party with another=20
woman, but was later caught snuggling with Naomi as the evening drew to=20
a close. He then whisked her by private jet to the coastal resort of=20
Trancoso, the paper claims.

At yet another party in Brazil, hosted by the country's minister=20
of culture Gilberto Gil in Salvador, Campbell was reportedly overheard=20
saying:
"Marcus and I are so happy together," and "I want to have a Brazilian=20
baby this year."

Marcus, owner of Latin America Equity Partners, said of the Naomi=
=20
engagement rumors: "I don't know what you are talking about. It's not=20
elegant to speak about such things. That was my upbringing-Mum told me=20
not to speak on such matters."
