February 2008
We have a LOT of events going on in the next few weeks. Here's the details!

Pantheon High vol. 2 Release Party, Feb. 16th
Tonight, 7 - 9pm -- FREE BEER

Pantheon High vol. 2

Odin's raven! Writer Paul Benjamin will join us for the release party of Pantheon High vol. 2, his new Tokyopop book! Join us on Saturday, February 16th, from 7 to 9 pm for Greek snacks of the Gods, nectar of the Gods (beer and other beverages), and socializing of the... you get the point. We had a great time for the first volume's party, and now that Pantheon High is one of our best-selling manga, we expect to have a celebration Bacchus himself would be proud of.

What's Pantheon High about? All the cool gods of Norse and Greek and Egyptian and all the other religions of the ancient world exist in our modern day, and their children all go to the same Los Angeles private school. It's like The Breakfast Club meets Clash of the Titans!

Mack White Signing Wednesday, Feb. 20th
3-6pm

Old West Journal Winter 2000

On February 20th, from 5 - 8pm, Mack White will be joining us to sign copies of the comics anthology book Hotwire vol. 2.

Well known for his comics work in indie anthologies like Zero Zero, and his own comics like Villa of the Mysteries, Mack White's work has recently focused a lot on fact-based subjects and on his studies as parapolitical researcher. The Busha Junta, a best-selling Fantagraphics anthology he co-edited and contributed to, took a look at the two Bush presidencies. In the anthology Hotwire vol. 2, White deconstructs the western myth of the OK Corral in his story "Showdown at Hustler's Ridge."

Be sure to check out the art and articles on his website linked above, and join us and meet a native Texan cartoonist not afraid to depict controversial topics in a new light.
Elric: Stealer of Souls Signing, Feb. 23rd
4 - 7pm
Elric: Stealer of Souls

On February 23rd, from 4 - 7pm, legendary writer Michael Moorcock will be here to sign the new Del Rey illustrated edition of Elric: Stealer of Souls. John Picacio, the book's cover and interior artist, will be here, as well. Don't miss this amazing opportunity!

Following the success of their Robert E. Howard Conan reprintings, Del Rey are now republishing Michael Moorcock's Elric stories in the order they were originally written. Elric, an albino sorcerer that relied more on his intelligence than strength, was a different kind of fantasy character, along with his sentient, vampiric sword Stormbringer. Moorcock has been hugely influential to writers of fantasy and comics both, and contemporary Alan Moore provides the Foreward for the first volume.

We'll have refreshments available during the signing.
The Nearly Infamous Zango
Laziest Launch Party Ever, Feb. 27, 9am - 8pm
Seriously, we're talking LAZY.

The Nearly Infamous Zango

That's right, this is going to be the laziest launch party ever! Creator Rob Osborne might not even show up!

Your purchase of the first issue of The Nearly Infamous Zango will get you free chips and some daytime television! Wear your bunny slippers!
STAPLE! Pre-Party, Feb. 29th
8 - 11pm

Shiner Bock beer!

Just like the first three years, we'll be hosting the STAPLE! Pre-Party on the Friday evening before the Independent Media Expo!

The Pre-Party gives the creators a chance to meet each other and fans before the busy day ahead of them. the atmosphere is relaxed, and as Texans, we know that our guests get the best. hence, a keg of Shiner (we really need to hit them up for a sponsorship sometime). There'll be other non-alcoholic beverages and snacks, as well.

We're expecting special guests Eric Powell and Brian Wood to drop by, so don't miss this mixer!
STAPLE! The Independent Media Expo, Mar. 1
11am - 7pm

STAPLE!

This year, the fourth STAPLE! Independent Media Expo will be at the Monarch Event Center on March 1st, from 11am to 7pm. Admission will be just five dollars.

What is STAPLE!, you ask? It's a convention that promotes independent creative media, like comics, art, animation, self-published literature and more! It gives an audience a chance to discover works by exciting new talents!

This year's special guests will be Eric Powell, creator of The Goon, and Brian Wood, whose comics include the vertigo titles DMZ and Northlanders.
Steve Gerber Tribute Howard the Duck Screening
Mar. 2nd
9:45 pm

Howard the Duck

We're proud to be teaming up with the Alamo Drafthouse for a special showing of Howard the Duck. We were sad to hear of Howard creator and comics legend Steve Gerber's passing, as his works were one of the earlier examples of the true potential of comics.

We know Gerber didn't like the movie, but if it helps introduce his timeless comics to the mainstream, you know we're onboard.
That's Not Even All
There's lot more events coming up.

On Saturday, March 8th, we'll be opening up our storage area from 10am - 5pm to make our back issues available for purchase! We open up the storage once a month, so mark your calendat!

On Saturday, March 16th, we will be hosting a Scary Mansion in-store. Singer Leah Hayes will also be signing her Fantagraphics book Funeral of the Heart.

April 9th, we will be joined by artist Paul Maybury, who will be signing his new graphic novel Aqua Leung.

...and at some point around South by Southwest, Judge Dredd is going to be dropping by the store. Seriously.
