REVIEWS:

Advance praise for McMafia by Misha Glenny.

"A riveting and chilling journey . . . Readers yearning for a deeper understanding of the real-life, international counterparts to The Sopranos need look no further than Glenny's engrossing study."
-- Publishers Weekly, starred review

"Amid the gathering storm of international organized crime and gangster capitalism, Misha Glenny stands alone as a journalist who has ventured to the heart of the whirlwind and survived to tell the tale. The breadth of this story is staggering. His aim, deadly accurate."
-- William Marsden, author of Stupid to the Last Drop

"In this well-researched and riveting account, Misha Glenny dissects the international criminal organizations that run much of the world's economy and explains how the criminal underworld has benefited from and contributed to globalization."
-- Joseph E. Stiglitz, winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics

Praise for Day by A. L. Kennedy

". . .an exceptional feat of research and an astonishing effort of the imagination. . . both terrifying and hilarious."
-- "Costa Book of the Year Award" jury citation

". . . perfectly, beautifully written. . . .[Kennedy's] style is arresting. There's a shadow of James Joyce in it."
-- Costa Jury Chair, Joanna Trollope

Praise for Die With Me by Elena Forbes

"Elena Forbes introduces an interesting new London homicide detective in her debut novel. . . . hunky but troubled Mark Tartaglia. . . . A stellar debut."
-- Ottawa Sun

Praise for Domain by Barbara Nickel

"Nickel is a master of rhythm and poetic form. Her approach to the sonnet, eclogue, terza rima, blank verse, the triolet, the glosa, and the sestina, show not only her dedication to matching form to content, but also an exceptional ear that remains attuned to notes from her present and her past."
-- Prairie Fire

ANANSI REVIEW CREW:

"Dear Gabriel is a book that gives one an open and honest glimpse into the life of an autistic child and the family that loves him. Gabriel comes alive for us as a full human, not merely someone defined by his limitations. Charming, aggravating, innocent he will find a place in your heart. . . . This allows the reader to enter this world free of prejudice and preconception -- to come to know Gabriel as his family does. . ."
-- Diane Pollock (Anansi Review Crew)

". . . [a] beautifully illustrated, profoundly moving dichotomous account. . . . achingly honest, ranging from open exasperation and anger, to tender love so gently expressed. . . . few would be able to write about such an emotionally taxing futility with the patience, fortitude, and beauty imparted by Freihow. He takes us on his Norwegian sea treasure hunts, and shows us the beauty of his most beautiful but enigmatic natural jewel -- Gabriel."
-- Lori Waters (Anansi Review Crew)

"This book's tone is so intimate and endearing that I feel like I've stumbled upon an actual letter, perhaps not meant for my eyes. . . . it is not until we reach the epilogue that the medical and social labels of atypical autism and ADHD are revealed. . . [which] allows readers the freedom to see Gabriel without analytic or preconceived lenses. Instead, we perceive him as his father does: as a vulnerable and intelligent young boy who seeks tangible and predictable signs of security. . . . [Dear Gabriel] addresses human relationships in all of their frailties and intricacies."
-- Susie DeCoste (Anansi Review Crew)

"[Dear Gabriel] will be of interest to all who have had to deal with autism, indeed to all who have an interest in the psychology of children in general. The clear love and empathy that Freihow expresses for his child and his various tender ways of coaxing him out his fearful or angry moments is quite inspirational. This is a moving story of how a father learns from his son's fundamental otherness and copes with thoughts of his son's uncertain future."
-- Christopher McEvilly (Anansi Review Crew)

"The love that Freihow and his wife have for [Gabriel] is fierce and protective. . . . Their relationship is built on love, words, trust, and a magical fantasy world. . . . Dear Gabriel will be appreciated by parents of autistic children, but should be read by all parents, too. It would be a very appropriate read, also, for anyone who plans to care for or teach in an environment where there could potentially be autistic children. . . . a very beautiful and heartwarming read. . ."
-- Linda Horricks (Anansi Review Crew)

"Unlike For the Love of Anne and some other nonfiction parent-child stories about autism, this is not the saga of a struggle to overcome the problems of autism. . . . This book could almost be about any tender father-son relationship. . . . a quick enjoyable read. I recommend it to anyone interested in autism, to people interested in the non-tourist areas of Norway, and to fathers and sons."
-- Michele Marques (Anansi Review Crew)

"My favourite Anansi book is The Deserter's Tale by Joshua Key and Lawrence Hill. It's an important and gripping narrative about the on-going effects of war, not only on those who fight but on those who choose to question and who ultimately make decisions that are difficult and controversial."

Mistik Lake by Martha Brooks was chosen as an ALA "Best Book for Young Adults."

Both books were also chosen for the "Outstanding International Books" list, a project of the United States Board on Books for Young People (USBBY).

REVIEWS:

Niwechihaw / I Help by Caitlin Dale Nicholson
". . . acrylic-on-canvas paintings give a dream-like feel to the story, making it almost a nostalgic look at childhood. . . . Recommended."
-- CM Magazine

Board Books for Babies by Jill Hartley
"A worthy addition to home libraries as well as public libraries serving a preschool audience. . . . Recommended."
-- CM Magazine

Pink by Nan Gregory
"[Pink] addresses a very important issue -- that there is little to be gained by longing for what you cannot have when you could be enjoying what you do have instead. . . . Without being didactic or preachy, this special picture book tells a good story and conveys an important message to its young readers."
-- Through the Looking Glass Children's Book Review

Rex Zero and the End of the World by Tim Wynne-Jones
"What more can be said about Tim Wynne-Jones and his remarkable stories? He is a gifted writer and continually creates characters to love and stories to make you stop and think."
-- Brandon Sun

Sex for Guys by Manne Forssberg
"[Forssberg's] tone is open, engaging, and funny, and he sounds as if he could be anybody's cool older brother. . . . Frank and uncensored voices of both young men and young women add to the authenticity. . . . [Sex for Guys] is a bargain, and a good thing, too, because teacher-librarians, guidance counselors, and sexuality/family life teachers will need to buy more than one copy of this book, as will guidance. Sooner or later, Sex for Guys will be "borrowed," and it will never be returned. . . . Highly Recommended."
