In today's lead news story, Kenyan rights activist Maina Kiai -- recognized as one of the country's leading independent voices since the beginning of the post-election violence -- emphasizes the ongoing conflict is a "political crisis with ethnic expression." Kiai also asserts the underlying issues are extremely deep-seated and must be dealt with resolutely, including through the drafting of a new constitution, the restructuring of the police, and the opening of non-violent spaces for civilian participation and expression.

Human rights are also at stake in Indonesia, where the European Union's targets to increase the use of biofuels is driving palm oil companies to violently infringe on indigenous communities' land.
