The Mountain Goats climb the ranks of folk rock

After lengthy solo stints and occasional band members, songwriter John Darnielle and bassist Peter Hughes have been touring since 1995 as The Mountain Goats. The folk-rock duo has released several albums, including "The Sunset Tree" and "Get Lonely." Their new album, "Heretic Pride," a culmination of Darnielle's imaginative lyrics about pulp fiction, mythical creatures and slasher films, will be released the day of their show at UAA.

Members of Alpha Phi Omega have one thing in common: an interest in participating in the community. This coed fraternity makes service, leadership and fellowship its priorities. The fraternity at UAA became an official chapter of Alpha Phi Omega a little over a year ago, but it has already had a huge impact on one Kincaid Elementary kindergarten class. Full Story

Students act bizarre to the commands of hypnotist Sailesh

It's not very often that the party begins after everyone goes to sleep. But this was the case on Feb. 8 when students flocked to the UAA Student Union cafeteria to be dazzled by world-renowned hypnotist Sailesh. The comedic performer, with 17 years of experience in countries including Canada, Sweden, Iceland, England and Finland, gave a group of 20 student volunteers the opportunity to be the stars of the show. APU trade-off gives more time to UAA soccer players

Popularity of the intramural sports program at UAA is on the rise, and the programs are beginning to look a little more serious. Julie Foster, UAA's Intramural Sports director, has taken steps toward expanding the intramural sports leagues, which include soccer, basketball and volleyball. Full Story

Their music blended the sounds of reggae, rock, jazz and funk that made the frigid weather outside a bit more bearable. Unlike "National Treasure," new film "Fool's Gold" will not leave audiences mystified about the knowledge of history. It is neither pretentious nor a vehicle to promote the ego of any particular star. eBay to buy back stolen historical items

ALBANY, N.Y. - Documents dating from the Civil War and others to and from Theodore and Franklin Roosevelt are among hundreds of stolen documents sold online that eBay is agreeing to buy back and return to New York's archives, a state official said Feb. 9. The online auction giant has no liability in the sale of the stolen artifacts but agreed voluntarily to offer buyers the amount that they paid, according to the official who spoke on the condition of anonymity because not all details of the investigation have been announced. School pulls spiked hot chocolate recipe WEST DES MOINES, Iowa - Officials at a junior high school yanked an edition of the student newspaper because it contained a recipe for hot chocolate that included peppermint schnapps. The January edition of Stillwell Junior High School's quarterly Tiger Tracks was pulled off the racks when the boozy recipe was discovered, Principal Tim Miller said. Full Story

If the Alaska caucuses on Super Tuesday were any indication, America seems to be experiencing a revival of interest in the political process. Turnout in Anchorage was so strong on Feb. 5 that many seeking to participate in the caucuses were turned away.
