OBAMA'S CLEAN SWEEP: Illinois senator wins in four states from Hillary
and he beats Bill Clinton at the Grammys.
Obama to Make Major Annoucement this morning On Tom Joyner Show at
7:50am EST.
*Barack Obama's bid to be the Democratic Party's presidential
nominee has come a step closer to happening.
On Saturday, the freshman senator from Illinois scored a clean
sweep from the West Coast to the Caribbean. Then on Sunday he won again
in the Maine caucuses, giving him even more momentum in a campaign where
every delegate has become crucial to capturing the nomination.
On the Republican side, Mike Huckabee easily won Saturday's GOP
caucuses in Kansas and narrowly won the Louisiana primary over his
party's front-runner, Senator John McCain, giving a breath of life to
the former Arkansas governor's uphill campaign. Meanwhile, the
Republican Party chairman in Washington state declared John McCain the
narrow winner of the state's caucuses, the Associated Press reported.
Obama won the Nebraska and Washington caucuses by greater than
two-to-one margins against Senator Hillary Clinton and easily captured
the Louisiana primary by a double-digit margin with heavy support among
African-American voters. Obama also swamped Clinton in the US Virgin
Islands caucuses.
Sunday, Obama once again defeated Clinton in the Maine
presidential caucuses, grabbing a majority of delegates. Despite snowy
weather and gusty winds, turnout was "incredible," said Arden Manning,
the state party's executive director. Obama won 15 delegates to the
national convention. Clinton won nine.
But because of the proportional awarding of delegates in the
Democratic contests, the two contenders remain locked in a close battle
for the 2,025 delegates needed to secure the party's nomination.
"We won north, we won south, we won in between," a jubilant Obama
told a Democratic Party dinner Saturday night in Virginia."
The attention now moves to Tuesday's "Potomac Primary," in which
Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia will hold primaries.
Polls suggest Obama is leading in Virginia and Maryland, and is
expected to win in the District, so the Clinton campaign is banking
heavily on wins in bigger states next month to keep her in the running.
IN OTHER OBAMA NEWS ...
Nationally syndicated radio personality Tom Joyner is scheduled to
interview Senator Obama this morning at 7:50am EST, says a press release
received by EUR late Sunday evening.
The release did not include specifics but only hinted that the
Democratic candidate is planning to make a major announcement and
discuss this weekend's victories.
The show is available via a live stream on BlackAmericaWeb.com
(http://blackamericaweb.com) or can be listened to via a local
affiliate. Find local listings at
http://www.blackamericaweb.com/site.aspx/tjms/listen/affiliates. Audio
files will be made available upon request immediately following the
show.
One of those victories, besides beating Hillary Clinton, is winning
a best-spoken word album Grammy for "The Audacity Of Hope: Thoughts On
Reclaiming The American Dream."
Interestingly, Obama beat out Hillary's husband Bill for his book
"Giving: How Each of Us Can Change the World" and former president Jimmy
Carter for "Sunday Mornings in Plains: Bringing Peace to a Changing
World."
Obama won the same award in 2006 for the audio version of his 1995
memoir "Dreams from My Father."
Even though Clinton and Carter lost, they both have won the
category before (Clinton, twice). And Hillary Clinton took home a Grammy
in 1996 for her audio version of the book "It Takes A Village."

WINEHOUSE, WEST DOMINATE GRAMMYS: Hancock pulls off unexpected upset.
*Music's biggest night has come and gone, bestowing honors upon
many deserving musicians (unless you ask Natalie cole who ironically
decried Amy Winehouse's awards due to her "bad behavior").
The Grammys, celebrating its 50th year, paid tribute to its
history by opening with Alicia Keys, styled with a glamorous 50s flair,
sitting at the piano singing "Learnin' the Blues" along with a
black-and-white video performance from the late Frank Sinatra. Prince
presented Keys with the best R&B song trophy for "No One" to kick off
the awards presentations.
Amy Winehouse, nominated for six awards, and Kanye West, for
eight, lost the big Kahuna album of the year award to Herbie Hancock in
an unexpected upset. The Grammy vet was awarded for his project "River:
The Joni Letters."
"You know it's been 43 years since the first and only time that a
jazz artist got the album of the year award," Hancock said, then
proceeded to honor "the giants upon whose shoulders I stand, some of
whom like Miles Davis, John Coltrane ... unquestionably deserved the
award in the past. But this is a new day, that proves that the
impossible can be made possible."
Despite the upset, neither nomination front-runner had a reason to
gripe (er...with Kanye, we take that back), with Winehouse picking up
five awards, the lions share of the night, and West walking away with a
respectable four.
Both West and Winehouse delivered impactful performances. West
performed a glow in the dark "Stronger" and a sincere ode, "Hey Mama,"
to his recently deceased muse and mother, Donda West, and Winehouse
performed quirky and defiant yet pure renditions of "You Know I'm No
Good" and "Rehab" live from London before a small cabaret audience.
Winehouse's Rehab obligations and U.S. Visa issues is what kept the
embattled singer on the other side of the pond.
"I am so proud of this album," Winehouse told The Associated Press
in a statement. "I put my heart and soul into it and it's wicked to be
recognized in this way. I feel truly honored to be mentioned in the same
breath as many of the artists present tonight and to win is even more
amazing!" She went on to grab the record of the year trophy, which she
was noticeably dumbfounded by.
Best rap album went to West, which prompted one of his Kanye-style
speeches. While accepting the trophy, the orchestra tried to play him
off the stage as he began speaking about his mother.
"It would be in good taste to stop the music," West said - and the
music stopped. He continued, "I know you're really proud of me right now
and I know you want me to be the No. 1 artist in the world and Mama, all
I'm going to do is keep making you proud. We run this."
The night offered several noteworthy performance collaborations,
including Alicia Keys performing "No One" with John Mayer, Fergie
performing "Finally" accompanied by John Legend, and Rihanna performing
the mega hits "Umbrella" and "Don't Stop the Music" mashed up with
"Jungle Love" by the first time reuniting of Morris Day and the Time.
Also, a battle of the hot-legs commenced during a performance with an
age-defyingly beautiful and spry Tina Turner teamed up with Beyonce on
"Proud Mary." The 'Queen' as Beyonce called her, hung in there and even
threw in a little high kick at the end for posterity. In true Grammy
form, a rousing gospel segment was also included, with performances by
Aretha Franklin, BeBe Winans, the Clark Sisters (who tied with Aretha
for best gospel performance), and Israel and New Breed.
Other winners for the night included Justin Timberlake and Mary J.
Blige (who strangely seemed to be MIA) with two each, and even
Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama for best spoken-word
album. The audience whooped it up when Barack Obama won his second
Grammy for best spoken world album for "The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts
on Reclaiming the American Dream."

ALICIA KEYS, AKON ROCK CLIVE'S PRE-GRAMMY PARTY: Whitney Houston was
there, but never took the stage as folks had hoped.
*Clive Davis' pre-Grammy concert party delivered on star power
Saturday night, with Janet Jackson, Quincy Jones, Nicole Richie and her
father Lionel among the guests in attendance. But those hoping to see
Whitney Houston take the stage would go home disappointed.
The singer, currently working on a comeback album under Davis'
guidance, was content to sit in the audience and watch such performers
as Alicia Keys, the Foo Fighters, Daughtry and Akon, according to the
Associated Press.
Other celebs in the building included rumored couple Rihanna and
Chris Brown, who "chatted together at one of the front tables," reports
AP; and New York Giants star Michael Strahan, who joined tennis champ
Serena Williams at another table.
"American Idol" judges Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson mingled
while last year's champ Jordin Sparks chatted with past finalist Chris
Daughtry.
Another "Idol" winner, Fantasia Barrino, attracted lots of
attention with her new hairstyle of bangs in the front and sheared
sides, with one spot dyed silver. The singer, who just wrapped her role
as Celie in Broadway's "The Color Purple," said of her new do, "It's
something different, post-Celie."
Akon joined friend and collaborator Wyclef Jean onstage to close
out the party. Jean started off his performance with a rendition of a
new song, "President," with a revised lyric: "Obama, Hillary Clinton,
they got competition ... vote for me for president."

TIMBALAND GOES OFF AT PRE-GRAMMY CONCERT: Plus, producer teams with
Verizon to release new songs through cell phones.
*Timbaland made headlines over the weekend on two fronts - his
collaboration with Verizon wireless to release one new single each
month, and for cursing out organizers of People magazine's pre-Grammy
concert for leaving some of his friends at the door.
According to reports, Timbaland took the stage with Missy Elliott
at People's star-studded affair at the Avalon Club in Hollywood and
launched into a "foul-mouthed tirade" against the magazine.
"Next time I have one of my homeboys in line, let that
(expletive) in!" Timbaland shouted as the event winded down after 2 a.m.
Saturday, adding that he was a "peoples person."
"I don't like to see my people turned around for some (expletive)
magazine ... (expletive) y'all!"
Right before he delivered his rant, he threatened to outdo Kanye
West, known for his outbursts.
An unnamed source close to Timbaland told the Associated Press
that the artist had been frustrated at what was described as security
and production mishaps, and said he didn't mean to take it out on the
magazine.
A source in People's camp said they didn't understand why
Timbaland was so upset, and that they had considered the event a
success.
The concert, which also included performances from Chris Cornell,
Paramore and One Republic, was co-sponsored by Verizon Wireless to
celebrate Timbaland's deal to create the world's first "mobile album,"
which will be exclusively available to subscribers of V Cast, Verizon's
mobile entertainment service.
The partnership calls for Timbaland to produce one song per month
throughout 2008. Each month, he will work with a different artist on a
track while touring the country on the Verizon Mobile Recording Studio
Bus, which will also capture making-of footage for V Cast subscribers on
a dedicated Timbaland channel. He will perform in some tour cities to be
announced, and Verizon will select subscribers to visit the tour bus in
other cities to watch him work his magic.
The first Verizon song features Mosley Music artist Keri Hilson.
SNOOP'S 'EGO' TO BE UNLEASHED IN MARCH: Interscope pushes up release
date for new album.
*Snoop Dogg fans will not have to wait until spring to get their
hands on new product. Interscope has announced that his new album "Ego
Trippin'," originally due in May, will now be released on March 11.
The street date was moved up to capitalize on the success of the
album's first single, "Sensual Seduction," which is currently No. 8 on
the Billboard Hot 100.
"Ego Trippin'" also includes the track "Hollywood Nights," which
features a swanky piano, fat horns and the cartoonish chorus "Those
Hollywood nights/they drive me crazy," notes Billboard.com.
The album opens with "Press Play," which uses a sample from the
Isley Brothers' "Atlantis." On "Never Have to Worry," Snoop recounts his
life story over a lush background of piano, saxophone and bass; and
"Make It Good" admonishes men who are scared of commitment.

'THE OPRAH STORE' IS OPEN FOR BUSINESS: Retail shop features hundreds of
items reflecting her personal style and interests.
*Oprah Winfrey's first retail store on U.S. soil opened its doors
for the first time Thursday near her sprawling Harpo Studios complex in
Chicago.
The 5500 square-foot shop features approximately 900 products that
represent "the style and taste Oprah celebrates and shares on 'The Oprah
Winfrey Show,'" her publicist said in a statement. "The interior was
created to evoke a loft-like urban feel with exposed ceiling along with
the extensive use of bamboo wood, brushed metals and green
chocolate-flaked marble."
Items include everything from books and workout gear - to
cosmetics bags and homemade keychains - to a $300 pair of crocodile
boots. The store also carries a signature line of baby products called
"O Baby," and select arts and crafts from South Africa, where she opened
a school for girls last year.
The most popular item sold during Thursday's grand opening were
$13 cosmetics bags decorated with blue, yellow, pink and purple Os.
'KIDS' CHOOSE MURPHY, BOW WOW, BEYONCE, KEYS: Artists among celebs
nominated for Kids Choice Awards.
*Eddie Murphy may not be top choice among a certain Spice Girl or
film producer these days, but his appeal among the nation's youth was
affirmed with a Kids Choice Award nomination for his role in "Shrek The
Third" as the voice of Donkey.
Murphy will compete against his two co-stars Mike Meyers and
Cameron Diaz in the category of favorite voice from an animated movie.
The film itself was nominated for favorite animated movie, giving "Shrek
the Third" a leading four nominations.
"Are We Done Yet?" was nominated for favorite movie, while its
star Ice Cube received a nod for favorite male movie star against
Murphy, Johnny Depp and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.
New Phoenix Suns center Shaquille O'Neal joins Venus Williams,
Serena Williams and Tiger Woods among the nominees for favorite athlete.
Other Kids Choice nominees include Bow Wow, Chris Brown, Soulja
Boy and Justin Timberlake in the favorite male singer category; and
Beyonce, Alicia Keys, Fergie and Miley Cyrus for favorite female singer.
Actor Jack Black will return as host for Nickelodeon's 21st annual
Kids Choice Awards, scheduled to air live on March 29. Viewers can go
online beginning March 3 to cast their votes for nominees.

'GIRLFRIENDS' TO HIGHLIGHT TEEN DRIVING ISSUES: Tonight's new episode to
promote initiative from Allstate Insurance.
*Allstate Insurance Company has joined forces with the CW series
"Girlfriends" to integrate a message about teen safe driving into an
episode to debut tonight at 9 p.m.
The storyline involves Maya Wilkes (Golden Brooks) and her son
Jabari (Kendre Berry) and will include dialogue about the risks and
responsibilities associated with teen driving. In addition, the
characters will specifically talk about Allstate's Parent Teen Driving
Contract. The episode is slated to run again on March 9.
Allstate hopes the episode will resonate with families across
America, particularly among African Americans, as according to the
Centers for Disease Control, 13.4% of African American teens fail to
wear seatbelts compared to Caucasian teens (9.4%).
In addition, the 30-second version of Allstate's "Tail Lights"
commercial will air during tonight's episode. "Tail Lights" is the
company's teen safe driving commercial, set to the tune of "From Where
You Are," a song written and performed by Jason Wade, lead singer of the
popular band Lifehouse.

PRINCE ANDREW OPENS GROCERY STORE IN COMPTON: Fourth in line to British
throne attends Thursday ceremony, but not without controversy.
*Compton, Calif. experienced a taste of British royalty Thursday
when Prince Andrew arrived to mark the opening of a new grocery store
owned by the British supermarket giant Tesco.
Los Angeles County Supervisor Yvonne Burke and Compton Mayor Eric
Perrodin were also at the ribbon-cutting ceremony of the Fresh and Easy
Neighborhood Market at 2175 W. Rosecrans Ave. at Central Avenue.
"I'm delighted to be able to support Tesco as they expand here in
the U.S.," said Prince Andrew, 47. "By locating stores in areas like
Compton, Tesco's Fresh and Easy will help contribute to local job
creation in neighborhoods that badly need it."
Fresh and Easy currently operates 43 grocery markets in Southern
California, Nevada and Arizona. Two weeks ago, the company opened a
store on Hollywood's iconic Walk of Fame.
A group called the Alliance for Healthy and Responsible Grocery
Stores had criticized Tesco for not opening more stores in underserved
urban communities.
"We applaud Tesco for opening a Fresh & Easy in Compton. However,
they have now applied for permits for at least 70 locations in Southern
California, and this is the first they've opened in an underserved
community -- and they have yet to open a store in South Los Angeles,"
said Elliott Petty, a retail analyst for the Los Angeles Alliance for a
New Economy. "For a corporation that came here proclaiming it was
different because it would open stores in communities historically
ignored by other grocers, one out of 70 sure reeks of tokenism," he
said.
Compton, best known as the birthplace of gangster rap group NWA,
was ranked the fourth most dangerous district in the US in a 2006
survey, with a murder rate several times higher than the national
average.
The Compton Fresh & Easy will employ 22 people. All entry-level
positions pay well over the minimum wage, starting at $10 an hour, with
a quarterly bonus of up to 10 percent. Also, all employees work a
minimum of 20 hours a week and are eligible for healthcare insurance.
