  Inside: This Week in Autos
For years American auto makers emphasized performance over comfort—to their peril, as they found out. While they continued to crank out big SUVs and trucks with big engines, the competition was crafting small and mid-size sedans that offered good gas mileage and well-made interiors. But finally, as Autos reporter Jim Henry points out, Detroit is taking its head out of its out-dated parts bin and creating interiors that can compete with those from Toyota and Honda. In his story on Detroit's new push for better interiors, he cites several new American cars, specifically the impressively redesigned Chevy Malibu and Cadillac CTS, as well as upcoming concepts like the Ford Verve, as good indicators of the direction GM, Ford and Chrysler are trying to head. It's too early, though, to gauge the impact this interior overhaul will have on sales. January is usually a pretty bad month, sales-wise, as Henry also reports, with Ford's total sales slipping 4.1% to 159,914 vehicles during the month, largely due to weakness at Jaguar and Mercury. Elsewhere this week we chatted with Dr. David Chan, the head of GM's operations in Beijing about the future of hybrid cars in China and reviewed the redesigned Ford Escape. Enjoy.
