    Dave Isay Hello Cliford,

Author:  Dave Isay is the founder of StoryCorps and its parent company, Sound Portraits Productions.  Over the past two decades his radio documentary work has won nearly every award in broadcasting, including five Peabody awards.  Dave has also received a Guggenheim Fellowship, a MacArthur Fellowship, and a United States Artists Fellowship.  He is the author (or co-author) of four books based on Sound Portraits radio stories, including Our America: Life and Death on the South Side of Chicago and Flophouse.  He and his wife, Jennifer Gonnerman, live in Brooklyn, New York.

Dave Isay, legendary radio producer, selects the most remarkable stories from an astonishing trove of memories and arranges them thematically into a beautiful mosaic of American life.  The themes of the interviews in this book remind us of the shared humanity that binds us all: Home and Family, Work and Dedication, Journeys, History and Struggle, and Fire and Water (which shares stories from September 11th and Hurricane Katrina).  The voices heard in these interviews connect readers to real people whose lives are filled with extraordinary and ordinary experiences and who remind us that no matter who we are or where we come from, we all share this journey of life.  StoryCorps is making history and Listening Is an Act of Love honors the participants of this revolutionary project and reaches out to those who now have the opportunity to share their lives through storytelling.  The incredibly moving personal stories in this book reveal the real individuals who make up the American storybook and the preciousness of each and every one of our lives.

Author:  Dr. Pauline W. Chen attended Harvard University and the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University and completed her surgical training at Yale University, the National Cancer Institute (National Institutes of Health), and UCLA, where she was most recently a member of the faculty.  In 1999, she was named the UCLA Outstanding Physician of the Year.  Dr. Chen's first nationally published piece, Dead Enough? The Paradox of Brain Death, appeared in the fall 2005 issue of The Virginia Quarterly Review and was a finalist for a 2006 National Magazine Award.  She is also the 2005 co-winner of the Staige D. Blackford Prize for Nonfiction and was a finalist for the 2002 James Kirkwood Prize in Creative Writing.  She lives near Boston with her husband and children.

Chen takes us where few do.  Her tales are also uncommonly moving, most especially when contemplating death and our difficulties as doctors and patients in coming to grips with it." ~ Atul Gawande, author of Complications: A Surgeon's Notes on an Imperfect Science.  Dr. Pauline W. Chen's book, Final Exam, does extremely well not only with support staff, but anyone who has ever had a family member in long term care or palliative care.  Most the letters that Pauline has received have been from relatives of end-of-life patients, writing her to thank her for having such compassion.

  • About Us...

Vivien L. Jennings is the Founder & President of Rainy Day Books, Inc.  Since Vivien opened the doors on November 04, 1975, Rainy Day Books has provided the Greater Kansas City community with a gathering place, a wellspring for ideas and creative thought, and an ongoing voice for literacy and awareness.  Rainy Day Books is the major independent bookseller in Kansas City, recognized locally and nationally profiled by The Kansas City Star and Publishers Weekly for its community Author Events, which average 300 plus per year.  Rainy Day Books recommends selections to over 140 book clubs in the area.  Vivien and her romantic partner Roger Doeren support many local charitable and civic organizations in raising both funds and awareness through many of the community Author Events.  Their philosophy is: "Bigger Isn't Better.  Better Is Better.  We are interested not so much in what we have done, but more in what we still want to do.  It is thrilling to watch people leave our Events with the knowledge that authors and their books can expand their awareness, improve their health, make them laugh, touch their hearts, and encourage them to achieve a better life in a better world.  This is truly the spirit of the 'Legacy of Literacy' that we hope to contribute to the community."
