Leading Off: A Trip To Football's "Mecca"
By Robert Hanashiro, Sports Shooter

It was cold.

How cold was it?

Cold enough to pop both of the lenses out of my glasses.

Cold enough to freeze my breath on the camera viewfinder.

Cold enough to wear not one, but two sets of long underwear. (Expedition weight no less!)

Cold enough for Peter Miller to go through a whole box of chemical hand warmers.

Cold enough to freeze your nose hairs.

Cold enough to REALLY believe those immortal words: "The frozen tundra that is Lambeau FieldŠ"

And I had the time of my life!

For our first issue of the New Year, we feature a thoughtful and inspirational article by my good friend Matt Mendelsohn. My colleague Jack Gruber gives us a behind the scenes look at his behind the scenes picture story on college basketball legend Eddie Sutton's quest for his 800th career win.

The PGA is in full swing and Robert Beck writes a quick list of tips if you want to join him on the links. Dan Powers gives us a local's view about the Packers season and the disappointing loss to the Giants. David Honl writes about Kazakhstan to kick off what I hope will be a regular feature on different, interesting locales photographers have worked in.

The Annual Sports Shooter Newsletter Contest deadline is Super Sunday Feb. 3 and we have the details on entering. For the gearheads out there, we have a quick users report on Canon's new EOS 1Ds Mark III and a few notes on new items that might be of interest to photographers. And our regular feature "Ask Sports Shooter" addresses questions from a couple of students on shutter speed and aperture.

Michael Connelly's "Lincoln Lawyer" and "The River of Doubt: Theodore Roosevelt's Darkest Journey" by Candice Millard are on the nightstand. Rhonda Vincent's "Good Thing Going", U2's "U218 Singles" and "Greetings From Hollywood" by the Royal Crown Revue are on heavy rotation on my iTunes.

From Robert Capa to Ray Charles: What's in your Mexican Suitcase?
By Matt Mendelsohn

Okay, so it isn't exactly Robert Capa's "Falling Soldier," but my discovery this week of a long lost negative of Ray Charles performing in 1983, located only after searching for a completely different lost negative, a frame of a legendary news photographer who passed away a few days ago, underscores just how tenuous our collective hold is on the past and just how likely we are to continue to lose valuable moments of history. And needless to say, my lost and found experience was just slightly overshadowed by some other news.

What Makes The Job 'Fun'
By Jack Gruber

USF basketball coach Eddie Sutton
People ask me all the time about what I like most about my job.

Saturday night would be the answer.

On Wednesday, I had an assignment to photograph long-time college basketball head coach Eddie Sutton at the University of San Francisco War Memorial Gym. Nothing special, just ten or fifteen minutes to make a portrait of the coach as he nears 800 career wins.

It's That Time of Year Again: Observations and Tips from the Links
By Robert Beck

It's that time again and the King of the K and I are saddling up for the golf season. So far we are looking at the Buick Invitational, the FBR in Phoenix where my daughter will help me, the AT & T, the LA tournament, the Match Play in Tucson, the Nabisco, the Masters, The Player's Championship, the Homeboy US Open and the British. That is a lot of hoofin' with a six, four, 70-200 and 24-70...with four spanking new Nikon D3 bodies blowing pixels onto those 4 gig cards. What I'm getting at is that we got to be in shape. I cut back on my trips to VG's and Kojo is trimming his Monster Drink intake.

From Frozen Tundra to Frozen Fish
By Dan Powers

The New York Giants Eli Manning raises his fist in victory after defeating the Green Bay Packers during the NFC Championship game Sunday, Jan. 20, 2008, in Green Bay.
Covering the Green Bay Packers was a lot of fun this year. Heck, it's fun every year. But having the unexpected happen is always a treat, and having the NFC Championship game in your back yard is a great way to cap off the seasonŠdespite the arctic blast that came with it.

Sports Shooter Destination
I heart Kazakhstan
By David Honl

Yes, Kazakhstan is a real country. Since it's been on my regular travel schedule, I can count on at least four hands how many people have made me a reluctant small talk ambassador by asking me to "say hi to Borat for me". Even my well-traveled photographer and photo editor friends can't resist this verbal gut reaction to my travel plans. Having spent most of the last half of 2007 working there, I've deduced that creator Sacha Baron Cohen threw a dart at a spinning globe to pick Mr. Sagdiyev's homeland and in the same stroke saved Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan from being the butt of the joke for movie-goers everywhere.

Photographers Toy Box
EOS 1Ds Mark III
By Patrick Murphy-Racey
(One in an occasional series on new or cool equipment of interest to photographers.)
The New EOS 1Ds Mark III: Here is a layman's review of this new camera from our friends at Canon. I'm no Ron Galbraith, I'm just a working stiff like most of you, so if you're looking for the "gigawatt draw from the flux capacitor," I'm not your guy.

Ask Sports Shooter
Stopping the action and cleaning up those S**TY backgrounds
By Robert Hanashiro, Sports Shooter

I recently received two emails about shutter speed and aperture settings in shooting sports. Since there two areas are semi-related, I thought I'd combine them into one column for this issue.

(Robert Seale, Bob Deutsch and Peter Miller please close your eyes.)

After months of rumors, design changes and testing, Think Tank Photo's entry into the rain cover market is now available.

New "Soft" Underwater Camera Housing
While wandering around the trade show of the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, I ran across a small booth near the robotics area showing off a new line of underwater housings for electronic gear like cellphones, iPods and yes, digital still and video cameras. (Why they were located in the robotics area at CES is anyone's guess.)
