Jazz at the Athenaeum: Quartet M
Athenaeum Music and Arts Library (La Jolla)
The series opens with four of today's leading artists on the new music end of the jazz spectrum, in a new configuration, Quartet M: Marty Ehrlich on reeds, Myra Melford on piano, Mark Dresser on bass, and Matt Wilson on drums. This is a double CD release event. JazzTimes hailed Marty Ehrlich as "one of the important jazz composers and creative improvisers in New York." Equally noted as a composer and a pianist, Myra Melford recasts the blues and boogie-woogie of her Chicago hometown, folds in elements of the music of Eastern Europe and India, and blends them with percussive avant-garde stylings. The New York Times called Mark Dresser "one of the great instrumental forces in recent American jazz outside of the mainstream." Matt Wilson's career as a drummer, composer and bandleader includes his own Arts and Crafts quartet, which appeared last spring at on the Jazz at The Neurosciences Institute series. The New York Times called him "easily one of the best drummers of his generation."
