Congratulations to Anansi author A.L. Kennedy, winner of Britain's Costa Book of the Year Award for Day, a novel about the brutal simplicities of war and the complexities of human emotion.

The Costa, formerly known as the Whitbread Award, is valued at $50,000.

In its citation, the jury notes Day is ". . .an exceptional feat of research and an astonishing effort of the imagination. . .both terrifying and hilarious." Jury Chair Joanna Trollope calls Day "perfectly, beautifully written. . . .[Kennedy's] style is arresting. There's a shadow of James Joyce in it."

This marks Kennedy's fifth international award for Day. She is also the recipient of the Lannan Literary Prize and the Saltire Society Scottish Book of the Year Award. Day was also a Globe and Mail "Top 100" book of the year.

Kennedy has also published Paradise with House of Anansi.
