  Inside: This Week in Autos
The 2008 North American International Auto Show opened to the press last Sunday and BusinessWeek was there in force. Not only were David Welch, David Kiley and Jim Henry on the ground but also BusinessWeek TV was there as well. Thanks to their combined efforts we were able to create a Special Report on the Detroit auto show that looked at a wide range of subjects, from Lincoln's push to build the MKT luxury crossover to the auto industry's concerns about the new CAFE standards. But the real point of the show is, of course, to introduce new cars and concept cars. As they did last year Messrs. Welch and Kiley give us their picks and pans of the show. Among the unanimous winners? The redesigned Ford F-150 pickup, BMW's 1 series and the hybrid Fisker Karma sports car. Losers include the phoned-in Mercedes GLK, and the Toyota A-Bat and Jeep Renegade concepts. Elsewhere this week we hailed the new Toyota Highlander and test drove the impressive Infiniti G37. Enjoy.

Here we go. California's South Coast Air Quality Management District issued a report saying that diesel emissions cause 84% of cancer risk in Southern California. Namely, diesel exhaust coming from the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach cause the biggest risk. In those areas, the study says, 2,900 people per million are at risk for cancer. More acceptable risk is 1 to 10 people per million. closequote
