- Happy New Year
While I always look forward to a new year and the opportunities (and
sometimes even the challenges) it brings, I am really looking forward to
2008.
Why am I so excited this year? The first half of this new year will see
the release of RootsMagic 4, followed shortly by the release of Personal
Historian 2. I am very excited about RootsMagic 4 and will be dishing out
more details in the coming weeks and months. I think this is the most
exciting upgrade we have ever released and am probably even more anxious
than our current users for its release (well, maybe it's a tie

- RootsMagic Cruise 2008
RootsMagic is pleased to announce the 2nd Annual RootsMagic Family History
Cruise.
This year we will be doing a "left coast" cruise to the Mexican Riviera
(Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan, and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico) from Sept 28 - Oct
5, 2008.
This year's cruise will include some of the best known speakers in the
genealogy world, including:
* Elizabeth Shown Mills, well known speaker and author of Evidence!,
Evidence Explained, Isle of Canes, and numerous other books and articles.
* George G. Morgan, genealogy expert, author, columnist, consultant, and
co-host of The Genealogy Guys Podcast.
* Dick Eastman, author of Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter.
* Gary M. Smith, researcher, speaker, and columnist for NGS NewsMagazine.
* Diana Crisman Smith, researcher, speaker, and columnist for NGS
NewsMagazine.
* Bruce Buzbee (well, maybe I'm not one of the best known speakers, but I
still have fun teaching RootsMagic classes

- Tip of the Month
This month's tip was provided by RootsMagic user Jerry Bryan.
Whenever you need to find or select a group of people, RootsMagic provides
the ability to find people based on data in their records. For example, in
the person list (RootsMagic Explorer) you can click the Find button at the
bottom of the search list to bring up a screen where you can tell
RootsMagic what to search for.
While many of the things you can search for are straightforward (like Birth
place contains California), the dates can be a little trickier to work
with. Here is Jerry's tip on different ways to search for dates to get the
results you are looking for...
I'm going to use searching on birth date as an example, but the following
tricks will work on any fact with a date. The tricks will also work on
"Any fact date", so you could check for various fact and date problems all
on one fell swoop.
1. Birthdate equals ________ (search field left blank)
Finds nobody (not a very useful trick)
2. Birthdate not equal to ________ (search field left blank)
Finds everybody (not a very useful trick)
3. Birthdate is blank
Finds everybody without a birth fact, and also finds everybody with a birth
fact and no birth date (a very useful trick). See #8 if you only want to
find people without a birth fact.
4. Birthdate is not blank
Finds everybody with a birth fact and a birth date, whether the birth date
is in a valid format or not (probably not very useful most of the time, but
could be occasionally)
5. Birthdate is before 2010 - (2010 is an arbitrary date in the future, if
you read this in the archives in 2011, then substitute 2015 or some date
that's in the future at that point)
Finds everybody with a birth fact and with a birth date in a valid format
(probably not very useful most of the time, but could be occasionally)
6. Birthdate is after 2010 - (2010 is an arbitrary date in the future, if
you read this in the archives in 2011, then substitute 2015 or some date
that's in the future at that point)
Finds everybody with a birth fact and with a birth date in an invalid
format (an extremely useful trick, can be used within the Search dialog of
RM Explorer to find text dates, otherwise this capability is only available
as a report). It would also find anybody you had entered with a birth date
after 2010, but you shouldn't have anybody in your database like that at
this point.
7. Birthdate contains __________ (search field left blank)
Finds everybody with a birth fact, irrespective of what it contains
(probably not very useful most of the time, but could be occasionally)
8. Birthdate does not contain __________ (search field left blank)
Finds everybody without a birth fact (an extremely useful trick, can be
used within the Search dialog of RM Explorer to find people with missing
birth facts, otherwise this capability is only available as a report). See
#3 if in addition you wish to find everybody with a birth fact and no birth
date.
