INTERVIEW WITH GALLANT ON HIS NEW DC PRO MODEL
Gallant, switch backside heel.

With his first-ever DC signature shoe hitting skate shops this week, we decided to catch up with Ryan Gallant to find out exactly what his goals were with the shoe. Check it out. (If you haven’t check out the full Gallant interview that we put out a few weeks ago, go here. He talks about growing up in Massachusetts, mentors, and nasty vices).

What were your basic goals when you started designing the shoe?
I just wanted a plain skate shoe that didn’t blow out and that didn’t feel like a thick sock after a day. I’ve skated in the Manteca and Avatar, so that’s what I talked about when making this shoe. My shoe has basically the Manteca 3 sole, so it’s good that it’s something I’m used to. Then I just wanted everything thinned out—I like a thin shoe.

Were there any specific technologies that you wanted used on your shoe?
We’ve got some serious Super Suede going: Super Suede+™. They’re reinforced, and every kickflip feels grippy and on point. I’ll kickflip a lot of shoes and the stitching will be all peeled back, then there’s the complete blow out. These ones will be kind of faded, but there’s reinforcement so they’ll last.

Were you happy with the final product?
They’re just so solid, but you can feel every part of your board. I’ve skated in the samples and I love the way it feels. They don’t feel like you have a big soft pillow on your foot, and they’re not like some shoes that are already so broken in that after the first day you feel like you’re falling all around.
Tell us about the special artwork on your insole, t-shirt, and shoebox.
Picking the art was a struggle. But we found David Flores, he drew me, and now that my shoe's out it’ll be pretty hot with the box, insole, and everything. I like it and I think it’s different to have the art involved... it’s something you just notice.

Overall, how does it feel to get a shoe on DC?
It’s a lot of pressure. I’m just honored and blessed to have a DC shoe. That’s what you dream about as a kid; I remember the Stevie coming out and the Kalis coming out. Now it’s like, holy s**t, my shoe is coming out.

How did you pick the colorways?
For colorways, the most important to me was a black with a white sole—that’s it. I need that always to skate in. I hate when there’s a shoe you like but it only comes in like, grey and white. Then I wanted something a little crazier, so there’s the green and black and white one.

If you could see one trend in skateboarding disappear, what would it be?
I wouldn’t mind seeing the vulcanized thing disappear. I like them, but everyone is trying to do it. And for clothes, some of it is just a costume. I’m not hating on tight pants or whatever you’re into, but some guys come out looking like Jack Sparrow; like straight up pirate outfits. What are they doing?
You’re the first DC pro to get a signature hat. How’s that?
Shoot, I’ve been wearing New Era’s for a while—ever since I started getting my first checks from skating. I’d buy a couple, then buy a couple more, then the skate companies started making them, so between Plan B, DC, and Gold Wheels my closet has rows of New Eras. Hundreds. Then DC knew I loved New Eras so they gave me a signature hat too. It’s just a little something-something extra so you can match up the kit. I guess if you’re not so good at matching it’s all laid out for you with the hat and shoes. I’m psyched to get a New Era.

It’s footage that was gathered during the recent North Shore season… with such crazy schedules, it’s rare to have all the boys in one place at one time, but this video has clips of Bruce Irons, Dane Reynolds, Ry Craike, and am team member Garrett Parkes.
