PENGUINISTAS HACK ANDROID ONTO REAL HARDWARE
Several actual hardware devices have been hacked to run Google's
Java-based Android software stack, including several Sharp Zaurus PDAs.
Although Google's preview release last fall included a software emulator
based on Qemu, real hardware may provide a better target for application
development.

YAHOO! COUNTERS ANDROID WITH SIMPLE WEB SERVICES TOOLS
In a move reminiscent of Google's "Android," Yahoo! has announced its
own toolkit aimed at improving mobile phones as Web services clients.
Early proponents of Yahoo! Mobile Widgets include phone vendors LG and
Motorola, with Linux phone stack vendor Access also looking at the
technology.

FIRST ANDROID PHONE?
At CES, Wistron NeWeb Corp. (WNC) is showing a hybrid GSM/VoWiFi phone
that runs Linux. The PDA and Dual Net Phone-GW4 boasts a 2.5-inch
touchscreen and a full QWERTY keyboard. One rumor claims it will be
ported to Google's Android platform by March.

USER-MODIFIABLE LINUX PHONE UPGRADED
Open source phone company OpenMoko will ship a new version of its
user-modifiable Linux-based mobile phone next year. The "Neo FreeRunner"
resembles OpenMoko's original Neo1973 model, but with WiFi, 3D
accelerometers, and a faster processor, as well as a consumer market
focus, according to the company.

NAVIGATION DEVICE USES LINUX PHONE PLATFORM
A Sunnyvale, Calif.-based start-up announced a WiFi- and
GPRS/GSM-equipped navigation device based on a newly upgraded
Linux-based mobile phone platform. Dash Navigation's "Dash Express"
borrows both hardware and software components from OpenMoko's
forthcoming Neo FreeRunner mobile phone, and boasts continual two-way
communications.

LINUX-BASED PMP FEATURES HEAD-WORN DISPLAY
A new Linux-based portable media player (PMP) is equipped with a
0.44-inch, head-mounted OLED microdisplay visor with 800 x 600
resolution. Dreamax's Indicube i-800 PMP offers an experience equivalent
to sitting seven feet from a 54-inch screen, the vendor claims.

LINUX VOIP STACK POWERS "KITCHEN COMMUNICATOR" DESIGN
Trolltech has announced a new spin on its Qtopia software stack for
Linux-based devices. The as-yet unnamed Qtopia stack has a nifty unified
messaging application stack acquired with Fonav, and will be supported
initially by a VoIP, IM, and email-enabled kitchen communication center
reference design from semiconductor giant Broadcom.

LOW-COST LINUX-BASED DESIGN NETWORK-ENABLES STEREO COMPONENTS
A Swiss vendor of digital media player (DMP) hardware-software reference
designs has switched to Linux. BridgeCo's third-generation "JukeBlox"
design is based on a custom ARM9 SoC, and has already been adopted by
several major AVR (audio-visual receiver) and table radio vendors, the
company claims.

LINUX-BASED WIFI RADIO HITS THE BIG TIME
French bluetooth accessory specialist Com One announced that its
Linux-based Phoenix WiFi Radio has upgraded firmware and is being widely
distributed. The Internet-enabled clock-radio is now being sold by
online retailers tigerdirect.com, mobilep***t.com, and buy.com, says
Com One, while distributors include DBL, D&H, and Nice Stuff.

MOT DEMO'S LINUX-BASED DVB-H HANDHELD
Motorola has announced a personal media player (PMP) and related
broadcast transmission equipment based on the emerging wireless TV
broadcast standard, DVB-H (digital video broadcast, handhelds). The
Linux-based Mobile TV DH01 handheld will enable the viewing of live,
on-demand, and recorded programs, says Motorola.

TINY UMPC RUNS LINUX
A Chinese firm will introduce a line of Linux-based ultra-mini PCs
(UMPC), one of which is said to be the size of a pack of playing cards.
LimePC says its self-named product suite will be based on Freescale
Semiconductor's MPC5121e system-on-chip (SoC).

CELUNITE CHANGES NAME, ANNOUNCES LIMO CIE WIN
Linux mobile phone software and services provider Celunite has changed
its name to Azingo, and will contribute components to the Linux Mobile
Foundation's common integration environment (CIE), it said.
Additionally, LiMo announced several new members, including Acrodea,
ETRI, Huawei, Purple Labs, and most notably, Trolltech.

EMERSON COMPLETES ACQUISITION OF MOT EMBEDDED UNIT
Emerson Network Power (ENP), a division of Emerson Electric, announced
it has completed its acquisition of Motorola's Embedded Communications
Computing group. The ECC sells Linux-compatible, carrier-grade
AdvancedTCA (ATCA), MicroTCA (MTCA), CompactPCI, and VMEbus products to
telecom, mil/aero, medical, and automation customers.

FIRST-EVER INTEL ARCHITECTURE SoC DEMO'D
At CES yesterday, Intel CEO Paul Otellini talked up Menlow, the
company's platform for Linux-based Mobile Internet Devices. He also
demo'd the first-ever Intel Architecture (IA) system-on-chip (SoC) for
consumer electronics, a "Canmore" processor available later this year
for Internet-enabled set-top boxes, media players, and TVs.

TORVALDS PODCAST DISCUSSES LINUX PHONES
Linus Torvalds will discuss Linux in mobile phones, GPL licensing
issues, his focus on desktop Linux, and other topics of the day in a
podcast to launch at 9AM PST/12PM EST. The podcast kicks off a series of
interviews produced by the Linux Foundation (LF).

PERSONAL ROBOTS COMING, STUDY FINDS
The personal robot market will be worth $15 billion annually by 2015,
according to an ABI report. Most personal robots shipping today use
proprietary OSes, although Linux is slowly migrating from the commercial
to the consumer robot market, according to an ABI analyst.

FIVE NEW FIRMWARE RELEASES TARGET LINUX-BASED "SLUG"
An online developer community that distributes alternative Linux-based
firmware for a low-cost networked attached storage (NAS) device has
announced five new firmware releases. NSLU2-linux.org's newly available
downloads for the LinkSys NSLU2 (aka "SLUG") include new Unslung,
SlugOS, OpenWrt, Angstrom, and Debian Linux releases.
