Editor's Corner: Name that Font!

About eight years ago, creativepro.com published an article with advice on identifying fonts. Author Kathleen Tinkel recommended that readers buy at least one of five "font detection bibles" to help name mystery fonts. Yes, she meant books. Large, printed books you would leaf through, page after page after page.

Nowadays, we still need to identify fonts, but free services on the Internet have usurped those books. Here are my favorites:

At What The Font?!, you can upload a GIF, JPEG, TIFF, or BMP with a few characters of the mystery font. A few seconds later, the site gives you its best guesses. For the most accurate results, follow the site's usage tips.

Identifont takes you through a series of questions about the font, such as "Do the characters look handwritten?" You can also find fonts that look like another font, and search for picture and symbol fonts that match keywords, such as "silhouette" or "bird."

FontShop's TypeNavigator narrows your search with a series of visual choices.

Happy hunting!
