Benazir Bhutto Assassinated
Pakistani opposition party leader Benazir Bhutto was killed today in a suicide attack during a rally in Rawalpindi, just twelve days before the country's parliamentary elections. Bhutto had returned to Pakistan in October after eight years of self-imposed exile, amid efforts to develop a power-sharing plan with President Pervez Musharraf. Just days ago, Musharraf lifted a state of emergency meant to stave off terrorist attacks. How will Bhutto's death affect Pakistan's movement towards democracy?
