This week on A Prairie Home Companion we'll visit the Zoellner Center at Lehigh University, in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. "...How still we see thee lie! Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by. Yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting light; The hopes and fears of all the
years are met in thee tonight..." But, there's no need to open the front door and let valuable heat escape for just any pitch-challenged carolers, because we've two excellent local choirs, The Central
Moravian Church Choir and The Bach Choir of Bethlehem, as well as some fine holiday hollerin' from Robin &
Linda Williams. Also with us, The Royal Academy of Radio Acting; Tim Russell, Sue Scott, and Fred Newman, the Guy's All-Star
Festivus Five, and the News from Lake Wobegon. Join us this weekend as the dark night wakes, the glory breaks, and Christmas comes once more.

Post to the Host:
I have quite a few of your tapes and books, so someone asked me what was your famous "Christmas saying" (quote)... it eludes me.
Would you share it with me?
Lynette S.
Hollister MO
It eludes me, too, Lynette. "There's no place like home when you're not feeling well"? Or how about this
"Craving only causes frustration, intense desire makes the object recede. If the game is really important, you're going to lose. If you're wildly in love, you're going to lose and you know it. The trick is to keep it from being that important. Be cool. Don't want it that much. Want it
less. When you get to where you don't want it at all, then you're more likely to get it. And if you don't get it, you don't care so much."
Ouch. That one hurts, it's so true. The Zen of the Midwest.

Are you in your 20s and talented? A Prairie Home Companion is looking for you! We had so many great submissions last year, we decided to pull from the same demographic people in their 20s. So, like last year, performers aged between 20 and 29 years are invited to submit a sample of their skills, and we'll pick the top contestants to appear on APHC's March 15th live broadcast from the Fitzgerald Theater.

A cucumber walks into a bar. "Whadda ya have?" asks the bartender.
"Two of everything," says the cuke. "I'm here to get pickled."
This joke was sent in by Scott B. of Saint Joe, IN. Thanks Scott!

Listened to the show Saturday and it was not bad. I'd spent a good part of the afternoon on the phone with an old friend from high school. Sonja Chatfield was her maiden name, and she called out of the blue to say hello. She was making a roast for a dinner party and couldn't decide how to season
it and remembered how I won first prize in our Home Economics class' annual recipe contest for my "Home for the Holidays Roast."

And so Mr. Scrooge kept Christmas in his heart and became a friend and benefactor to all and also got his hair and eyebrows trimmed. He made Bob Cratchit a partner, and an orthopedic surgeon fixed Tiny Tim's gimpy leg so he could jump and run, and Scrooge & Marley became ScratchitInc and got out of
the countinghouse business and into venture capital.

Pontoon: A Novel of Lake Wobegon |
In Lake Wobegon lives a good Lutheran lady who is quite prepared
to die and wishes to be cremated and her ashes placed inside a bowling ball and dropped into the lake, no prayers, no hymns, thank you very much. Meanwhile, the Detmer girl returns from California where she has made a killing in veterinary aromatherapy to marry her boyfriend Brent aboard Wally's
pontoon boat, presided over by her minister, Misty Naylor of the Sisterhood of the Sacred Spirit. Brent arrives on Thursday. On Saturday, a delegation of renegade Lutheran pastors from Denmark come to town on their tour of America, their punishment for having denied the divinity of Jesus. And
Barbara Peterson, whose mother, Evelyn, left the startling note about cremation and the bowling ball, is in love with a lovely fat man who slips around town in the dim light and reconnoiters with her at the Romeo Motel.

Never Better: Stories from Lake Wobegon |
Fans of A Prairie Home Companion eagerly await each new
collection of Garrison Keillor's "News from Lake Wobegon" monologues. Recorded during live radio broadcasts, Never Better features characters we know and love, a meditation on Christmas, migrating turtles, flying Elvises, and more warm, witty, poignant, often hilarious tales from America's favorite
storyteller. As they say in Lake Wobegon, "It could be worse." But what they think is: It's never been better. About 2 hours.

A Prairie Home Companion: the DVD |
Legendary director Robert Altman's take on Garrison Keillor's show
boasts a dream cast, terrific music, and a story that tugs at the heartstrings. Keillor, Meryl Streep, Lindsay Lohan, Lily Tomlin, Woody Harrelson, John C. Reilly, Kevin Kline, Virginia Madsen, and Tommy Lee Jones star in a film about the final broadcast of America's most celebrated radio show.
(Don't worry; it's only a movie.)
"What a lovely film this is, so gentle and whimsical, so simple and profound" Roger Ebert.
"A great gang of stars having a great time, brilliantly directed by Robert Altman" Larry King. 1 hour 45 min.
