PENNY-SIZED FLASH DRIVE HOLDS 16GB
Intel has announced a flash memory companion module for its forthcoming
"Menlow" chipset for Linux-based mobile Internet devices (MIDs). The
Z-P140 SSD (solid-state drive) measures 0.7 x 0.5 x 0.07 inches (18 x 12
x 1.8mm), and will be available in capacities up to 16GB.

LINUX PHONE HEAVYWEIGHTS SELECT COMMON DEV TOOLS
An influential industry group collaborating on a common Linux-based
operating system for mobile phones has standardized on a common
toolchain. The Linux Mobile Foundation (LiMO) will standardize on Wind
River's commercial Linux technology as a "Common Integration
Environment" (CIE), Wind River announced.

EMBEDDED LINUX MARKET RESEARCH COMPARES MONTAVISTA, WIND RIVER
MontaVista is touting its starring role in a recent Embedded Market
Forecasters (EMF) study. MontaVista says EMF found that compared to Wind
River users, MontaVista users produced more lines of code with fewer
developers, and more often achieved their pre-development performance
and feature expectations.

MAJOR CHINESE HANDSET VENDOR ADOPTS LINUX FOR 3G PHONES
One of China's largest handset and infrastructure vendors has reportedly
adopted a Linux-based mobile phone software stack as part of its
standard 3G mobile phone operating system. ZTE will incorporate
Trolltech's Qtopia Phone Edition into its Linux-based "U980" platform
for 3G TD-CDMA phones, according to Trolltech.

DSP-POWERED COMPACTFLASH COMPUTER RUNS UCLINUX
A British systems integrator has developed a second-generation computer
based on the CompactFlash (CF) format. C Data Solutions's Compact
Computer (CoCo) runs uClinux on a 500MHz Blackfin DSP (digital signal
processor), and offers programmable I/O via an integrated FPGA
(field-programmable gate array).

INTEL RELEASES FIBER CHANNEL-OVER-ETHERNET STACK FOR LINUX
Intel Corp. has released "initiator" source code to enable Linux
implementations of Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE). By allowing fiber
channel SAN traffic to run over Gigabit Ethernet networks, says Intel,
storage area network (SAN) and LAN traffic can be consolidated,
simplifying network infrastructure in datacenters.

NASA MANDATES OPEN SOURCE FOR NEXT-GEN AVIONICS SYSTEM
NASA has reportedly called for "open source specifications" in Boeing's
contract to build a next-generation avionics system. The avionics
system will guide Ares rockets responsible for launching the manned
Orion spacecraft into Earth orbit, and then driving it to the moon.

LINUX-BASED POS DEVICE ACHIEVES PCI PED CERTIFICATION
Italian point-of-sale (POS) vendor Da Sistemi Group has introduced a
Linux-based POS device. The Dandy POS is claimed to be the first PCI-PED
certified solution running exclusively on a single-chip SoC -- in this
case, Innova Card's USIP.

TINY X86 MODULE RUNS LINUX
Icop Technology has announced a "low-power embedded controller" that is
effectively a complete headless PC crammed onto a board measuring just 4
x 2.6 inches. The VSX-6115 runs Linux on a 32-bit x86-compatible
system-on-chip (SoC) clocked at 300MHz.
