Published on December 14, 2007, in Notable Openings

Barchetta

Waterfront seats with sweeping views (and a chance of dolphin-spotting) distinguish Barchetta On The Bay, a vast Italian eatery in North Bay Village, from its many fratelli; a value-priced menu with crowd-pleasers like crab cakes, calamari, hearty pastas and a raw bar means that spectators don't go hungry, especially during the lively weekday happy hours (1601 79th St. Cswy.; 305-861-2228).

Published on December 17, 2007, in Notable Openings

2nd Ave Deli

2nd Ave Deli – New York's famed temple to pastrami, corned beef and chicken soup – has returned boasting a second-generation owner, Jeremy Lebewohl (nephew of founder Abe Lebewohl), and a new Murray Hill location that's quite a bit smaller than its original East Village digs; open 24/7, it now features a liquor license, plus gratis gribenes (deep-fried chicken skin and onions) to supplement the pickles on the tables and the classic menu of Jewish comfort-food fare; N.B. plans are in place to re-create the Yiddish Theater Walk of Fame on the sidewalk outside.

Rose Parade

Published on December 18, 2007, in The List

Green Street Tavern

The East Coast might win on New Year's Eve what with its earlier time zone and Times Square ball drop, but the West Coast definitely takes the first day of the year thanks to the Rose Bowl and its century-old Tournament of Roses parade, a two-and-a-half hour, flower-filled jaunt through Pasadena, California, watched by millions each year.

If you're planning to go and watch the roses roll by, might we suggest a few popular nearby eateries to head to after (and, in one case, before) the parade has passed...

“Something about NY sensibilities seemed to preclude great barbeque, in much the same way that it is hard to get a great bagel or knish in El Paso.”
